I have a 69 AS beetle with a 009 distributor and an H30/31 carb, I have read that this is a bad combination.  I recently came across a 111 905 205 m distributor and I was wondering if this would be a better combination?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hiya Jim,

I don't know that I'd go so far as to say the 009 and the 30/31 are a bad combination.  They will work together.  It's just that the original distributor and carburetor would be a better (read: optimal) combination.

The 205M (by the way are you sure about that VW parts number?  I'm thinking it should be 113 905 205M) is the OEM dizzy for a manual tranny 68 Bug.  You'd be much better off with a 205P or 205AA.

And, FWIW, you'd also be better off with a Solex 30 PICT1 or 30PICT2 doing your carburetion.

Thanks for the reply.  I would love to go back to original, but Im just in the process of a tune-up.  Have had the beetle for a while now and thought I should get it to run better.  I'm just curious which distributor is a better choice out of the two I have.  The 009 or the 111 905 205 m (0 231147 002).

Thanks again for your help

Hiya Jim,

Whoa!  I did find your 111 905 205M.  It's listed as an acceptable alternative distributor for an old 40 horse engine from the early sixties.

Neither your 205M or the 009 were ever intended to be run on a 1600 or 1500, much less on an AutoStick equipped car.  As such, I'd guess it would be something of a toss-up as to which one you used.  You might try running the 205M to see if it gets you any benefits over the 009.  Sort of a comparison test.

Do you have any idea what I should set the points and timing at?

Thanks again

I bought a new SVDA BOSCH Distributor from aircooled.net
and its soooo smooth compared to the 009 I had been running...
I really didn't think the 009 was too bad...lol

but it amazes Me every day... how smooth the engine can be with the correct dizzy...

more powerful and not using as much gas either...

although the ethanol in the gas is a bit of a problem...
My beetle doesn't even like to smell it... lol

and at the moment... many pumps are not showing ethanol has been added...
but My engine reckons it has....lol

cheers
