A local VW guy that has helped me with a lot of stuff asked me if I wanted the transmission out of a AS bug he was scrapping (it was his parts car). He says the transmission is fine, but if I dont want it, its going to the scrapyard. I being the packrat I am accepted, and now its sitting in my other cars trunk. Im wondering if its worth keeping now, is it good to have a backup of something like this? Its got all the connections on it still, has the servo unit on the side and such.

Hi Brandon,
My answer is - absolutely. If you need something from it, it's there and if you never have to use it you can on-sell if you so desire. If it has all the switches, bonus round to you. Don't forget it has a clutch plate, TO bearing etc that may still be in good nick.

Yes yes yes

If You ever need another gearbox or a clutch piece
You will have one sitting there and not have to find another one

You can take the bellhousing off and check out the clutch plate etc..
or leave it until you need it... if ever..
I would drain the oil out of the gearbox
as the zinc in the bushes gets eaten away by the hypoid oil..
