What were the number of AS's produced each year and by VW Type?  And for Type 1's Sedan vs Vert? (For obvious reasons)

Hiya Blue,

Welcome to the forum!

I've done my share of research into the history of the AutoStick.  I have yet to find specific production numbers for the AS.  You have a further problem in getting the numbers you want.  Not all of the production in Germany was bound for the North American market.  That complicates matters as things stand right now.  What we do know is that AS production varied from year to year but generally was around the 10% mark of total Type 1 production.  However, if other markets took delivery of less AS equipped cars (and that was probably the case inasmuch as AS production was started, in large part, to target the North American market) the North American market would likely be getting more than 10%.

If you should run into hard numbers on AS production be sure to let us know about them.  This is a question that has come up a few times before.

VW kept good records of most changes etc...
but I could never find any info on them either

Not a lot of them in Australia...
1968 seems to be the biggest year...

lots of Karmann Ghias had them too...

maybe if We could find out how many flexplates were made... lol

cheers

well, seeing that Volkswagen did NOT make the Cabriolets

Karmann in Osnabruck made all VW cabriolets..

maybe there are Karmann numbers somewhere....????

but I've never ever seen any numbers anywhere...

I think the reason being... My 1968 type 1 sedan with Autostick and 1500 engine and front disc brakes--

in the VW factory, it was a 1300 type 1 beetle sedan with the M?? Autostick option plus M?? 1500 engine option
and M?? front disc brake option...

so, it wasn't really listed as an autostick model beetle... Just a 1300 model type 1 with options....
1300 autostick beetles were sold in Europe and the UK...

I read in an english version of a beetle handbook published in 1968 that the automatic beetle was a special vehicle
rather than made up of options.. as it had the IRS CV Joint rear suspension... where manual beetles had swing arm..

but in 1969 all beetles sold in Northern America had this IRS CV joint rear suspension...
but only Supers had this suspension in many other countries..

so, there should have been numbers of automatic beetles for the 1968 year.....??? at least..???
but have never found any numbers anywhere..!!
