I'm new and have been reading many posts and see that you guys are the AS experts!

I have a failing 1600 in my '71 vert AS.  I've had it for 1.5 years and really enjoy that little car.  I am beginning to plan it's rebuild and am looking at upping it to 1776cc with a counterbalanced crank, better flowing heads (P&P), maybe an upgraded cam and 1.25 rockers from EVW , tap case (new case) for external oil cooler, forged crank, balanced rods, and crank power pully.  I'm less interested in performance (although a bit more than the 1600!) -- but more interested in smooth running and longevity.  In fact, a Jet-a-Vator is probably in it's future, which I understand will relocated the power to the lower end of the spectrum.

I plan to keep with the original 34Pict-3 that Keith reworked for me last year as I don' t want to deal with relocating my CV and spending lots of money and time on getting dual Weber's to work properly with the vacuum needs of the AS.  Anyhow, dual carbs will probably definitely put the combination over 100hp and ruin my chances of keeping the AS.  Everything else pretty much stock, including the exhaust since I want to retain the heat boxes.

Do you think this combination will be below 100hp so I can keep the autostick?  I very much enjoy the AS and want to keep it, but like I've been reading, I'm worried about future parts.  Also, this may be a marginal combination for the clutch to handle.  Is there a stronger clutch that would work in there?  So far, one engine builder told me that the stock clutch is barely strong enough for the 1600, so don't go 1776.

I know I'm asking alot, but regarding parts, what do you recommend I try to get and hold onto a spare of:  control valve, flex plate, tranny -- anything else?

Thanks,

I don't know of any 180mm clutches that would work better..
remembering that the clutch arm is pulled by vacuum from the servo..
so, a higher tensioned pressure plate may NOT work...

I think if You are driving normally... You shouldn't have any problems...
there were hotted up beetles back in the 50s and early 60s with 180mm clutches ...
so, I don't think You will have any worries..
as there is NO slip with the clutch..  IN or OUT..

I have collected many spare parts for My autostick...
Control valves- servos- also servo repair kit from the USA-
torque converter - flex plate - gearboxes complete...

the torque converter takes all the load to the engine... IMHO..
so, the clutch transmits all the power to the torque converter..

all the spares You can find... remember if you have a spare..
chances are You won't need it.. lol   ;D

cheers
