Hi

The torque converter needs to be aligned with two seperate splined shafts, that is probably why it wouldn't go on.
and Yes that is the normal way to fit it, and why there are those square holes to insert the special screws
and the manuals also stress not to drop any screws into the bell housing, but I have never had any problems.

Did You need to turn the torque converter slightly to align the splined shafts?

cheers

I always thought:

Mcpherson strut and flat windscreen = 1302
Mcpherson strut and curved windscreen = 1303
Beam and flat windscreen = 1300

Hi
First beetles up to 1965 in USA were king and link pin front end and swing rear axles.
then VW in Germany started the changes that resulted in the 1967 one year beetle and all the changes in 1968.
In Australia We went from the 1962 model beetle with very few changes until 1968.. all with flat windscreens..
than the 1302S arrived with the flatish windscreen [actually it isn't flat and only fits in one way]
then the  1303S in 1973 with the large curved windscreen with all the changes to meet USA regulations which didin't eventuate.

in Australia,  We also had the NON Super beetles from 1971 to 1974 all with swing rear axles like the early beetles.
and in 1976 the 1303S  was replaced by a NON Super flat windscreen beetle similar to the 1968 beetle but with the rear suspension of the autosticks.  All other non supers in Australia had the old swing rear axle suspension.

Word has it that the 1976 beetles were made from parts left over in the Factory, from the 1974 NON Supers with rear suspension from the SUPERBEETLES plus the padded flat dash...  whether this IS correct I don't know..??

cheers
