Easier access during AS clutch adjust, *IF* you have the extra access hole

Hi All,

I'm a new member and just recently got a 1971 AS Super. As I was getting ready to adjust the clutch I decided to remove the left rear wheel to be able to crawl under and back out more easily.

And that is when I saw... a hole. If your Beetle has this hole, you can adjust your clutch without laying on your back under the car and needing two or three small hands. You can peer into the hole while doing the work with your right arm and a 13 mm open-end wrench.

I created a small web page with photos here : http://myweb.cableone.net/dicklenznd/AS_Clutch_Adjust/default.html

Please note that the information contained there is from a recent thread's postings by Lee Noonan and Carl Iseminger. All I did was notice a hole and take some photos. I hope all of your Beetles have this--it will make this job much easier.

What a small world this is.  Some one in my state no less that has an Autostick!  Thanks for mentioning my name!  Going to have to print that out and keep it in my files for future reference.  Sure would save me having to crawl under that car again.  And I wish I would have known that the nut was backwards.  The first time I almost gave up, but my hand slipped and suddenly it was loose.  Then realized it was backwards.  I don't remember if it ever stated that in the book.

Hi
Well, I'm supposing the BODY hole You mentioned, was for the fitment of an anti roll bar on 1968-69-70
NON autostick beetles with swing axles...[in Australian delivered cars]  these holes may have been in earlier cars in other countries and may have been in ALL beetles after 1968>  the rear anti roll bar with fittings that went into those holes either side were NOT used on autostick or super beetles because they had the IRS with CV joint axles [NOT swing axles]. Whether later model NON Supers had the anti roll bar I don't know, and whether all beetle bodies after 1968 had the holes I don't know. It would have been easier at the factory to leave the holes there I would presume when stamping out panels.
The link didn't work for Me here...[maybe too old]??? so I'm guessing the holes You used..
and Yes the adjuster has a Right Hand thread and a Left Hand thread on the other end.. so it will screw correctly either way [like a rope/wire adjuster].  Sadly, I didn't used those holes....

Lee in Australia...
