Does anyone have one that they can snap a couple pics of and take some measurements of so I can try and replicate it for my 73? I know Bookwus made a batch a couple years ago.

Thanks Dave, the decal is a sticker that went on the rear window and installed by the dealership, not the chromed decklid script.

Sorry, as soon as I posted that I realised that was a badge.  Is this any help? It might give you a clue as to the size etc.

I would love to have a couple of those decals.  I seem to remember someone making them, but that was before I ever bought my autostick so I have no idea who or where it was.  Anyone up for making some and selling to us members? :D

rayar3

Yes that's it. Bookwus made them but he passed away. If anyone can get measurements they should be easy to get made at a vinyl shop.

Hi
I always wondered if Mike still had some of those vinyl decals left when He passed away.
He got terminally ill  very fast and wasn't well enough to be on here as a moderator.
I can measure My decal if no  one else has one..
the original ones were only used in the USA and were a water decal put onto the rear window by the selling dealer.
The ones Mike had made were on a clear vinyl, that had no adhesive, just wet it, place it on glass and get all the bubbles out of it..  I found it very easy to fit, even on the inside of the rear curved window.  I don't know what the type of vinyl is called.. like static cling???
Knowing Mike these decals would be identical to the originals in size.

cheers

Lee,  If you could measure your decal that would be great.  I think I found a web site where I could order just one, so might do that.  I would love for people to know it is an autostick since my car came with just the VW Automatic logo on the deck lid.

Hi Carl
Yes, I'll measure it for You and yes that is one on the rear window of that 71 [approx] red beetle on the rear window.

They were VERY Large for a decal...  so, VW [USA] really wanted them to be known and noticed.   The metal badge used in Australia says    VW Automatic  .
I have only heard of one car having the Autostick script badge in Australia. [originally]
they may be others now with the badges bought thru ebay or from the USA.
I have seen them for sale at VW shows in Australia from a fellow who buys and sells parts from Australiato the USA  and USA parts to Australia.. He does VW shows in both countries..

cheers

 Hi Carl

white letters are 15/16ths high [the t is slightly higher]  the letters measure 16 inches long total including the gaps between letters
from end to end..
the k and h measure 1 1/4 inches high...
which You probably can't change.. as the size of the font will determine that.

the gaps between the words may be fixed by the font??  but I'll measure them..  they are 3/4 of an inch.. maybe two normal gaps??

the actual clear vinyl measures 17 1/4 inches from end to end

the clear vinyl measures 2 inches  from top to bottom

so long as the finished product looks similar to the photo of the red beetle on here...

and the letters [font] are similar looking..  no one will notice any small changes....

cheers

PS: from memory, I thought it was larger.. lol   but its still a large sticker /decal...

Thank you for the measurements.  Now to play around on the web and find a place that will do a sticker for me.  My early '68 has the VW Automatic logo on the deck lid.  I have heard that it was used so that VW could get the cars out to the dealers as the Automatick Stickshift metal logo wasn't ready.

Now I will be able to let people know I have an auto stick.

Did ALL autosticks have the stickshift badge Carl???
in the USA??

We had neither in Australia..

just the VW AUTOMATIC      BADGE OFF THE TYPE 3s OR automatic BUSES ETC..

even though ALL autosticks were fully imported into AUstralia...

but manual beetles were assembled in Australia using local and imported parts..
the  seats and glass and many electrical parts were all Aussie made..

I am not sure of the years that actually had the Automatic Stickshift badge on the deck lid.  The VERY early '68s didn't have them as I stated before.  The factory wanted the beetles to get to the US dealers and the badge wasn't ready.  So they just stuck the VW Automatic badge on there.  Then there were a couple of years the badge was on the car, and then they went to the Volkswagen badge, with the sticker in the window, and then the sticker went away too.

I suppose if I had a copy of Garwood's Car of the Century, I could find exactly when the badge was on the car.

I have wanted one of those badges, but since my paint is original, and just a tish faded, when I pulled the VW Automatic badge off, there was a shadow on the deck lid.  So that is why I am going for sticker.

Found this font with the gracious assistance of my graphics design co-worker:

Needs to be beefed up a bit (bolded maybe) but what do you think?

I see you made it over here to this forum.  There is lots of information here and they are very helpful.  They have helped me quite a bit.
