Help Please!!

I have a 73 type 1 AS.
Just where do I fine the paint code?
I have looked for the production plate but there is not one.
I don't even find where it could have been.
All I find is the VIN and chassis plate.
I am at a loss with this.
It is a one owner car and never repainted.

See if this link will give you the info you want.

Hiya BR,

The paint code is (or was) on a paper sticker located behind the spare tire if your car is a standard.  On the other hand, if it's a SuperBeetle, I dunno.

However, all is not lost.

Post back here with the following info and I can supply you with your paint name and code.
Give me the third number in your VIN (if you are correct about having a 73, that third number should be a 3), a description of the exterior color (as in light blue or dark orange), the color of the seat coverings (if they appear to be original), convertible or sedan, and Super or standard.

Bookwus,

The Vin is 1132810858.
It is a standard beetle.
I have not found a paper sticker behind the spare.
Just a metal chassis plate.
It is a reddish orange color.
I think Wolfsburg says Blood Orange, I dunno though.

Thanks,
Brian

Hiya Brian,

I checked the information you forwarded to me in Garwood's Car of the Century.  The 1973 production year was kinda crazy insofar as paint schemes went.  Some colors were Super only, some were Convertible only, one was Standard only and one was Special Edition only.  Interestingly there were no oranges (at least none with "orange" in the name) applied to Standards that year.  The only orange offered was Bright Orange (L20) used on Supers only.  However, Standards that year were painted Kasan Red (L30B) which could well be a dark orange.

Bright Orange WAS offered on Standards during the 1974 production year.  Garwood does note that Blood Orange (actually the name for this color was Tangerine (L21E)) was NOT offered on 1973 sedans imported into the US market.  If, indeed, you have a 1973 sedan which is L21E, you may have a foreign market car.

Finally Brian, do know this............the information for paint colors used during a given year is often contradictory.  Paint manufacturers will often list paint colors by the year in which they were produced rather than used.  So it's not uncommon to see a chip chart from a paint manufacturer listing (for example) 1970 colors for 1971.  Garwood lists what actually came into the US market during a given production year.

Failing all else, send your VIN to the Stiftung Automuseum in Wolfsburg.  They will tell you the original color for your particular car and some other interesting production details as well.
