Hello All,

First what a great site and a wealth of information :).

Now my problem, The carb on my wifes 69 AS is shot, throttle shaft vacume leak. I have tried local and have no luck locateing a replacement. I actually ordered one from the local napa and recieved a genuine 1969 AS solex but it was before I had researched this issue much and it had a bad throttle shaft seal so I returned it. In hind site I wish I had kept it so I at least had an original carb to rebuild instead of the brosol paperweight that is on there now.

So here is what I have

carb: H30/31 Pict brosol
Dizzy: Its a Bosch and the numbers on it are as follows: 213 115 078 and under that 113 905 205 AA

What I would like to know; Where can I get a good replacement carb that I can bolt on and have it run good with this dizzy? I understand that I will not be able to purchase an off the shelf carb with the correct vacume port but I have no issue following the directions I have found on here to correct that.

second question, should I/could I replace/upgrade the carb and dizzy together to something that has proven to provide good performance and longevity? ie is there an aftermarket electronic pickup dizzy and carb combo that would work well on this?

This is the wife's DD so I want the most solid performance adn relibility I can find.

Thanks for any input and  my lovely little woman and myself thankyou

Steve.

Hiya Steve,

Welcome to the forum.

As you already know, both the carburetor and the distributor are independently very important.  Teaming them up into an effective package is whole 'nuther ballgame.

Your 205AA distributor is, indeed, an original for a 69 AutoStick.  As such, I'd recommend that you take a good hard look at its health.  Vacuum can still operating?  No wobble in the mainshaft?  Points plate move freely?  The usual stuff.  If it checks out as being OK, it is your best bet for a happy future.  Even if it doesn't, you should give serious thought to having it rebuilt.

The Brosol 30/31 is a bit more problematical.  They can be set up to give good performance but I have yet to see one that does not require a thorough cleaning (when brand new outta the box!) and adjusting.  I ran one for about a year and had little complaint other than my mileage wasn't too good.  Like you however I wanted to go back to stock so I looked around and found a Solex AS 30PICT3 (my car is a 70) and had it rebushed and rebuilt.  I'd never go back to a 30/31 now.

Were it me, I'd go looking for a Solex 30PICT2.  But this has its little dangers also.  The 30PICT2 has a little problem with its air adjust screw towards the bottom of the carb.  Those who know say that if the passages behind this screw are clogged, one is much better off just junking the carb.  So, how to get a good one?  My advice would be to contact kiefernet over at the Samba.  He is responsible for the rebuild on my 30PICT3.  This guy has forgotten more about VW carburetion than I'll ever be learning.  And he has a lot of carburetor bodies (yes, probably including a rebuildable 30PICT2) in stock.  I'd zap an e-mail his way and explore the possibilities.

A good 30PICT2 and your 205AA are going to give you your best combination of performance and reliability.  The engineers over in Wolfsburg will all stand behind that.

Hiya Steve,

Great!

And make sure that he knows you're looking for a 30PICT2 for an AutoStick.  He may well have AS specific carbs.  If he does not, you'd just need to do the drilling thing you mentioned above.  No big deal.

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.
