Thanks Volkenstein, sorry I forgot to post a follow-up here, but I got the distributor re-shimmed and reinstalled- everything seems to be working again just as it should.
BTW I completely forgot to double check the orientation of the drive dog when I reinstalled it on the distributor shaft- I had a 50/50 shot at getting it right the first time and I got lucky!
