AS Transmission - How Heavy?

Hi Guys

Seeing as my torque convertor appears to be toast I have been looking for a replacement and came across a complete transmission, the owner removed it from a 35000 mile car so hopefully it will be good, trouble is its over 200 miles away, does anyone know the weight of the transmission so I could ask my friendly haulage company to pick it up for me? One other question my Ghia is a '71 the 35k mile one is from a '74 Ghia should they swap over, though I suspect my tranny is not the original anyway.

Hiya Air,

Just a guess based on having mine out and on the floor of the garage for a while.  Around 125 to 140 pounds.  I could pick it up, but it was a task.  Definitely could not put in place without a jack.  And I'm thinking a not inconsiderable portion of that weight was the torque converter. 

The transmission out of a 74 would have the Park feature whereas an earlier tranny would not.

the transmissions are NOT too heavy
they can be picked up quite easily...
ie no torque converter or starter motor -

I wouldn't want to walk any distance carrying one though.. lol

Filled with oil .. makes it heavier...
Torque converter filled with ATF also adds weight...

Have the torque converter tied onto the shaft so it cannot go anywhere..
try & obtain the control valve - ATF tank - Vacuum Tank -
Flex plate that is bolted to the engine...Important..
gear lever assembly -   and a spare  starter motor would be excellent....

If the starter motor is bolted to the gearbox- plus the torque converter-
the gearbox is going to be a bit heavy..

they are interchangeable...  Autosticks...

there are numbers printed on them which tell when they were made etc..

Airhead,
          Better safe than sorry, I'd try and get the shifter stop plate (under the shifter,stick is the same) and shift rod. You know, if you need a converter you can use just that and drop it into your own trans. Further, why not exchange everything in the bellhousing? By that I mean Bellhousing, TC and the clutch assembly in one hit and drop it onto your current trans assembly? The low mile trans would be handy if something were to go hideously wrong with your current trans.

I'm not sure on the plate...
but at a guess I'd say Yes....
seeing it has another position...
anyone else want to guess???
