I understand there are two different autostick oil pumps, one for a dished cam and one for the other type cam. I would like to buy a spare autostick oil pump but how can I tell what type pump I have. I have taken pictures of my oil pump but I don't know what to look for in making the determination. Can anyone advise me what I have or what I should be looking for?
My car is a 1970 Karmann Ghia. I do not know it's history therefore I have no idea what cam the engine contains.

Hiya auto,

VW didn't set out to make this easy for you, that's for sure.

For starters, the outside housing you have pictured was used in all AutoStick oil/ATF pump applications.  Mostly the part that changed was the internal oil pump.  VW had to enlarge the size of the oil pump to accomodate the 10mm oil passages in the dual port engines

In order to determine the correct spare pump for your car you'll need to know what you have (internally) right now.  This gets a bit dicey because allmost any combination of camshafts and oil pumps could have been thrown into the engine over the past 39 years.  The best way is to pull your pump and check it out.  Otherwise you are left with buying an oil/ATF pump for a 70 KG which may, or may not be the the pump you really want.

. Only way to be 100% sure of what you've got.

HI

it should have the later model pump if it has a doghouse oil cooler...

You will be surprised at the minimal wear, if any inside the pump...

while you have the pump off...

I would suggest replacing the two small oil seals that seperate the ATF to the engine oil..
they are available from evw in the USA...
they were unavailable for many years...

cheers
