we have 2 air filters for the car. The original oil bath air filter and a chrome air filter ( that i cant find a replacement paper filter for at any auto parts place near by).being that we cant find any replacement paper filters we've been using the oil bath air filtration. It seems to be restricting the air flow to the carb. when its semi cold like when you first start up. it will want to almost stall out. so i went around back and felt at the air filter where the air goes into and it dosent feel like there any air going in at all. not only untill you press on the gas a bit does it feel like its finally pulling air through. i never had any experience with these oil bath air filters. any info on them would be great help

Hiya df,

In actuality the stock oil bath air filter is far superior to the aftermarket stuff.

Some plusses......no air restriction at all..........the air does not go through any filtering medium whatsoever (more on that later)........the stock oil bath air filter has a built in velocity stack which aids performance somewhat...............maintenance is pretty easy, just dump out the old oil, clean, and refill.

About the air movement............air is directed through the filter housing around tight corner which dirt (being carried by the air) cannot negotiate.  The dirt then winds up in the oil.

One does need to clean the fiber innards of the air filter every other time one changes the oil in the filter.

It sounds to me as if you may have a preheat valve stuck in the air intake.  Earlier models of the air filter had a cable attachement to the thermostat to open up that valve.  Later models were "self-contained" with a wax/parrafin based switch wghicxh would warm up and open that valve.  Possibly you have a bad switch?

Yes, everything I've read about oil bath air cleaners has been good..
they suck warm air from below the tinware when the engine is cold...
EMPI sell a lot of air filters and replacement air elements.
I use a chromed after market air filter just for looks..
I wouldn't use it if I was going where there was dusty conditions..

I've never seen the dual inlet oil bath oil filters that had the cable working..
