Hi Everyone
I'm new to the register but have bought a '68 semi auto beetle, problem i have is that the seal between the torque converter and the gearbox has blown and I can't seem to find one anywhere, does anyone know where i can either buy one here in england (or anywhere else!) or if some kind soul has a spare one i can buy off them?? PLEASE HELP!!! If it helps the VW part no. on the seal is - 001301083

I don't know where you could get one in the UK, but, I have a couple of them if need be.
I have a huge order of box parts coming in from the states and Germany for my box rebuild and I ordered a few spares of most parts including torque converter seals from Elring. These are the 001 301 083 B version that ETKA lists as only fitting 1970 onwards models but I am pretty sure it will fit. I will ask my supplier if they have the earlier number and I will find out tomorrow. The B should be in stock in a week or so. I am in Nottingham. Are you sure it is the seal between the torque converter and the one way clutch or the seal on the other side of the bearing.

the early Torque Converter oil seal is 001 301 083 and is a different size [I presume]
I did have both seals at one stage but never measured them , and sold the 001 301 083B seal.
they do look different as one has an external spring and the other has an internal spring..
they are very hard to find in Australia...
I believe I may have bought the last 001 301 083 in Australia 10 years ago..
I do have a replacement I bought from CIP1 in the USA.
they are relatively easy to obtain in the USA...
but a different story in other countries where the Autostick is fairly rare..
If the torque converter oil seal is leaking, You would have ATF fluid coming out of the squarish hole under the rear of the gearbox...

001 301 083B is all CIP1 has left.
If anyone is really curious, I have some of each type and can take a look to see what it different.

I have been led to believe the later seal can replace the early type. I will have to look on my fiche if the one way clutch changed number and if the torque converters are interchangeable.

that would be great to see if the later torque converter is the same...
I did replace My torque converter, as I didn't know the splines had to line up..
Not sure what model beetle My torque converter came from..?
I just thought it would be the same...
Had the engine out a few times...
Never gave it a thought it could be different... ??
I just looked up CIP1.. they have both T/C seals listed in stock..

Just an offhand comment here....................I would tend to go with Cobey had to say about seal availability from CIP1.
We have far too many online parts companies here in the USA that will promise you anything in their online catalogs, only to let you know later that the part is "now unavailable".
This is a pet peeve of mine. I really wish that the online catalogs these guys use could actually reflect what they have in stock OR can easily and quickly put their hands on.
It's distressing when you see something listed, get all exited and then get let down, isn't it?

thanks to all who have replied, i have managed to get one now, it was the seal with the external spring that although cip1 said they had in stock but when i phoned they no longer had any left!! but..... Lee if you need one then VW Heritage in the UK have them in stock!!! not sure how many they have so be quick if you need one. Once again thanks for all your help everyone she's now back on the road :D
One of the local VW parts stores is going out of business, so yesterday I had a chance to go in and get stuff "on sale". I cleaned out the Type 1 transmission parts.
While looking at the parts on the shelves, I recognized this torque converter seal. They had 3 with a black seal, and 1 that was red, although all 4 were in a bin marked 001 301 083B, the 70-75 seal. When I look at the pics on the CIP site, they show the early one being black, the late one is red. I didn't know about the location of the spring, I can check that later. I suspect they may have 3 early (001 301 083) and one late seal.
Is this seal really tough to find? If anyone wants them, I can get them. Send me a PM.
It is doubtful, but I will ask about the front trans mount and the TO bearing. The only other 001 part I saw was the hockey stick seal. I can use those.

If you have the time, anything connected with the control valve like the three waisted rubber mounts, CV upper and lower modulator diaphragm rubbers, replacement O-rings and seals, and replacement check valves.
Besides the T-O bearing these appear to be the ne plus ultra of Autostick NLA.
When I think about it, a lot is rare or hard to find :( Like carrier plate seals, or the seal behind the 6004 bearing...
They (VW) sold three seperate rebuild kits for the CV's, not just a "one does all" and if "The Noof"'s experience with A-S's in Canada is any indication it could be a fair shot some of them may be lying around up your way.
I'll e-mail Lee if he doesn't send you a PM re the black seal (and so will I, but in 30 days when I get paid :( ) in the near future.

I asked about any other autostick parts they may have and the seals were all they had.
The only other thing they had was what the counter guy thought was a rebuilt Autostick trans. He was unsure of it because it has been in their wharehouse for a couple of decades. This transmission is in Vancouver Canada and would be pretty expensive to ship, so it would be more attractive to a local buyer. It could be had very cheap.
