Manny, I've tried to install the painless wiring harness, I have a '71 Super.  I purchased the harness through J.C. Whitney, however, there were no provisions for the autostick electricals (temp switch, P/N switch, or shift solenoid) I had to fabricate these by myself.  Other than that the harness is fine.  The hardest part of the installation was routing the main harness through the body cavity (behind where the L/R fender attatches to the body) VW used an insulating foam aroound the factory-installed harness that took quite awhile to get out, enough so that I coould pass the new harness through.  I used a straightened coat hanger to pull it through.  It worked well. :)
