HERE WE GO......MY SON HAS BEEN MAD ON VWS SINCE HE WAS ABOUT 6 YEARS OLD.HE IS 36 NOW.HE HAS ALLWAYS DREAMED THAT ONE DAY HE WOULD GET ONE.BUT THEN A FEW YEARS AGO HE HAD A MOTOBIKE CRASH :( THE DOCS SAID THAT HE COULD ONLY DRIVE AN AUTOMATIC CAR..WELL HIS DREAMS OF A BEETLE WENT OUT THE WINDOW.BUT THEN I GOT TOLKING TO A BLOKE THAT SAID YOU CAN CHANGE A MANUAL INTO AN AUTOMATIC.SO I WENT OUT AND GOT MY SON A GIFT.A 1971 LOWERED BEETLE.HE WAS SO HAPPY.I TRYED TO FIND THE MAN AGAIN BUT HE HAS MOVED AWAY...I HAVE BEEN TO 2 GARAGES CLOSE TO ME AND ASKED THEM IF THEY COULD CHANGE THE GEAR BOX FOR ME IF I CAN FIND 1...THEY SAID YOU CAN NOT CHANGE A MANUAL INTO AN AUTOMATIC...SO I AM HERE ASKING YOU FOR INFOR.AS I PUT OUT NOTICES ALL OVER THE NET AND EVERY ONE SAID I SHOULD ASK YOU...I HOPE YOU CAN GIVE ME GOOD NEWS...

Yes you can change a standard to an auto and vice versa. most mechanics dont like to work on the auto here in the US. my suggestion is to find a mechanic that specialzes on type 1s. they may even have a complete auto setup. alot of auto sticks are changed to standards and most tranny rebuilders wont take the auto trans for a core. also try your local wrecking yards. hope this helps. ps I bought a complete auto stick setup here for $100, and the shop was happy to get it. :D

what you will need is the transmission with the clutch and carrier plate, tourque converter, flex plate, gland nut, vaccum control valve, vaccum resivoir, combination atf and oil pump, atf tank,shift lever for an autostick, you may need to modify your intake manifold for a large vaccum port. all this must be taken off when an auto stick is converted to a standard transmission. so find a shop that has been repairing type 1s for a long time, and they may have quite a few of these setups available. :D
