Title: Light and other electrical things
Post by: eraser on May 17, 2004, 07:36:47 AM
Howdy again,
Okies got a few Q's (all about 1968 from germany),
I cant remember now but when i turn my Car lights on are the lights in the speedometer meant to change between parking and driving lights? (like slightly illuminated speedo toa fully illuminated speedo as i just notice that otshard to see the speedo at night, and wasnt sure if it was like that before)
Also with the headlights what is the easiest way to align them correctly (like draw a cross on the wall or something?)
And finally i had a startup problem with the VW when i had the radio attatched was draining the car, so i was thinking was it on the wrong circuit and what is the correct (i got all the wiring diagrams but hard to really see what one is what) and could the generater be on its way out and not supplying the right voltage to keep everythign running and charging the bettery?

Hi Marc,
Your speedo should have two light bulbs - one either side closest to the top of the speedo [not really near the top though] ..
If Your Battery doesn't go flat You have no worries... It shouldn't matter where Your Radio is connected to, unless its a  high powered stereo unit.
Many youngsters are finding out that a 360 watt generator won't keep the headlamps, wipers, stoplamps, Blinkers and a CD Player going - ALL at the same time..
Headlamps.. On Low Beam - I just bend down to see where they are shining in Your eyes as I have done many headlamps and I always replace My headlamps with H4 Quartz Halogen sealed beam units... and We don't normally have sealed Beam units in Australia.. Local Cars did back in the 60s & 70s..   but NOT foreign cars... so I have to install them & align them...
You can put a cross on the wall 24 inches from the ground and with the car 12 feet from the wall.. adjust the headlamps..  Its very important that Low beam doesn't blind the oncoming driver..
I hope this is of some help...

Hiya Marc,

Here are a few additional thoughts about your problems to consider........

1.  There should be no change in the intensity of your speedometer lights unless you are adjusting them with the rotary rheostat in your headlight switch.  If they are changing in intensity as you go from parking lights to headlights, my guess would be that the speedometer lights are incorrectly connected to the headlight switch.  You might want to check the connections against the wiring diagrams in your Bentley.

2.  Aligning your headlights is a pretty easy operation.  Again the entire procedure is outlined in Bentley in the Electrical System section.

3.  An accessory radio in a stock 68 sedan should be wired into the number 10 fuse.  That number 10 fuse would be otherwise unused.  Number 10 is an always hot circuit and a problem (read short or drain) there could conceivably drain down your battery.  You want to check for circuit integrity.  A good wiring diagram for your 68 is available in (yeah, you guessed it) the Bentley.

Mike,

Do You know if there are any pages from the Bentley manual on any web pages on the Web??
The Robert Bentley Manual [Volkswagen of America] naturally wan't made for Australia.. and are rare over here or Over $100...  which keeps them rare.. :):)
I have 10 different repair manuals + a few different handbooks etc
tuning etc..  but I don't have VWs for Idiots:):) by the late John Muir..

Hiya Lee,

Geez, we have to get you set up with a Bentley and a Muir.  I can get you a good Bentley for around $25 to $30 US.  My daughter is the editor in charge Of Muir's Idiot Book at Avalon Publishing (yes, you did read that correctly).  I have more of these things than I know what to do with.  I'd be glad to GIVE you one.

Howsabout I do this..............I'll snoop around and find you a good Bentley (which one do you want, 70 and later or 68 and 69?).  I'll find out how much it will cost to ship 'em (both the Muir and the Bentley) over to OZ.  I'll let you know the total cost. You give me a thumbs up or thumbs down and I'll act accordingly.

Whaddysay mate?

Hi Mike,
My Son has the late John Muirs Book...  I have read it but I don't like it..
It seems that VW Australasia didn't sell their workshop manual to the public...  as I've never seen one...  I did see a very dirty & worn Bentley at a swap meet for $88.00...
They do sell New ones here for $115-00....!!!!
I do have 10 other repair manuals plus owners handbooks etc... mostly from the USA.. from Amazon.. My sister in Law visited some friends over there about 4 years ago, so I had all the books sent to the friends address and My Sister in Law bought them back...   A Nephew was over there the next year, and I had some new VW Books sent to an address He was going to stay at before coming home, but a week before ,He was walking across a road with a close friend when She was hit by a Car... He was very upset and came straight home... The person He was going to Visit then came over for Xmas and bought the books over...
I have also downloaded about 60-70 pages from the internet on Beetles.
I would prefer a Bentley for the 68-69 Beetle...  Can it be shipped by Sea Mail??  A fellow over here on the local VW forum says He buys everything from the US and its sent by Seamail.. takes a while.. otherwise the airmail is ALWAYS MORE expensive than the parts....
I was looking at VW parts from Washington state but a local told Me they don't ship by MAIL.. only UPS and You get charged $52 duty plus GST etc etc.. plus the freight...
I really probably only need the autostick pages from the Bentley manual Mike...  We have different wiring diagrams in Australian Spec Beetles...
and its difficult to find an Australian wiring diagram that is the same as our cars.....
Thanks Mike..

i dont know if this will help but i found a websight that has free color diagrams. The ones in my service manual are in black and white, so having them in color helps alot. Some are in german but they should be identical to the ones in your manual so use it for a translation.
