Title: Source for automatic brake pedal rubber?
Post by: BastardBug on September 16, 2004, 06:10:17 AM
I need a source for automatic brake pedal rubber covers. I've been using a pedal cover set (from pep boys), but I want the original style or at least a good reproduction. Thanks

Hiya Bastard,

This topic comes up quite a bit.  It had been my impression that West Coast Metric had a corner on this market when they decided to drop this product from their line.  For most of us that meant the brake pedal pad was no longer obtainable.
However, if you search down through similar threads, Carolmcbug suggested pointing your browser at www.evwparts.com   Apparently they still do have the original-style brake pedal pad.  I can't speak for the quality, but if it's the only game in town, whaddygonna do?

Do you think there is any chance that VW might still have them in stock?  Anyone know the original part number?

Hiya gleason,

Although I have learned not to say, "Never" when it comes to locating VW parts, finding the brake pedal pad for an AutoStick at a VW dealer has to come close.

It's my understanding (this is hearsay at it's best - or worst depending on how you look at it) that West Coast Metric grabbed the pedal pads VW had left in stock sometime after the end of the air-cooled era.  They repackaged these and sold them under the WCM label.  $10.00 each.  Of course, their stock was depleted over the years and then they (and quite a few other vendors) got hit with VWoA's aggressive copyright infringement campaign a few years ago.  WCM, in the midst of dumping a lot of expensive VW "signature" parts, decided not to pursue the pedal pads which have the VW roundel right in the middle of the pad.  So.......either their stock ran out before VW came calling or they dumped it because of the VW roundel.  In either event, any of those are no longer obtainable, unless you know somebody who bought one and stuck it in his parts stash.

The long and the short of it is that I seriously doubt you will find any of these pads in VW inventory.  But you would be well advised to check it out just to be certain.  You do not need a VW parts number for this little exercise.  Just hop on down to your local VW dealer's parts department and tell the counterman just what you need.  He has the parts diagrams on computer and should be able to find what you want in a few seconds.

Let us know how you do.

Hiya again gleason,

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why you don't want to business with evw?  Have you done business with them?

I checked their website and they are offering the AutoStick brake pedal pad.  In fact, they are offering quite a few hard-to-find AS parts.  That clutch disc is not a common offering at all.  They might be a good resource if they are on the up-and-up.

Quick question, I have a source that says the brake pedal on the 68-70 is a different size than the ones from 71-74 (the later being shorter in length), does anyone know if this is true?

Hiya Dean,

I have an old West Coast Metric AutoStick brake pedal pad still in its original bubblewrap.  Its label claims it is good for AS brake pedal pads from 68 to 75.  Based on that, I'd guess they were all the same size.  Is your source a good one?

kinda iffy really, I'm thinking they are mistaking autostick for automatic.  I picked one up from that EVW place and it is about 3/4" to 1" too short to fit on my pedal.  So it is going back.  I found a guy on ebay selling a new Autostick Pedal pad for 68-70 and he had one for 71-74, so who knows.  I also bought the 68-70 pad from him and we'll see if that one is correct.  Also didn't have a chance to take some pics of the bug fenderless and little spots of primer etc..

Hiya Dean,

Be sure to let us know how this pedal pad business turns out for you.  To tell the truth, I'd never even given the matter any thought until your post appeared here.  And since your experience with the EVW pad, I'm beginning to wonder if there might be a difference.

Hang in there and keep us updated on your project too.

Well I got the brake pedal rubber in today, fits perfectly.  It is nice and clean, makes the rest look pretty bad with the old carpet, gas pedal etc....  It has an odd emblem in the middle and is made in brazil so there just might be more out there.  I am going to email them and see if they have more of them available.  Got some pics of the bug also, gotta clean them up and everything before i post them.  Also, a little winter project that is going to take some time is I am looking to find another working wiper switch for my 70 beetle.    More on that once I have found one.  On that note, does anyone know where or how I can find out how to remove those knobs and switches off the dash?  I am stumped myself, the headlight knob is actually broken off (has a piece of wire to pull on to turn them on) and i cannot figure out how to get the remaining pieces of plastic off the shaft so I can put the new knob on.  Anyway this is getting a little long winded so I will cut myself off here.

Hiya Dean,

If you can, take a picture of that brake pedal pad and its center emblem.  That I'd like to see.  Who was the seller?

As for light switches, you are talking to the right guy.  I have pulled and replaced more of those things than I care to remember.  The knob on the headlight switch screws off.  Left to loosen.  So....whatever remains on the metal shaft should come off by screwing to the left.

On the other hand if you want to remove the entire switch you will need to remove the escutcheon which surrounds that metal shaft as it emerges from the dash.  There is a tool for this operation (or you could easily make one), but being lazy by nature, I usually just use a pair of needlenose pliers to unscrew the escutcheon.

And.......here's a tip on the headlight switch.  Most of the OEM switches are about shot.  Generally they function OK but the rheostat (which dims the interior lights) is shot or on its way out.  Aftermarket switches (many from Taiwan) are notoriously shoddy.  But there is an outfit in California (Ventura Warehouse Group) which has started manufacturing their own replacement headlight switches.  I have heard only very good things about these switches.  So, I ordered one for my Bug and one for my Bus.  If you are interested Dean, the part number is 311 941 531B and it is carried by The Bus Depot which is in your neck of the woods.  Cost is around $20US as I recall.  Great deal on a great part.

Hang in there!

Ok here we go, I just got an email back from the seller and she has 2 left in stock.  Now once she sells those two she orders 12 more at a time so it seems she has a source for them.  Her email is crystaleve80@yahoo.com but her ebay name is 'crystaleve80'.  I threw out the envelope I got from them for some reason and they are out of Levittown, PA.  And from her response she seems willing to ship overseas  :D  I'll have a pic up asap of the brake pedal pad and add it to this rather long topic.

Ok here is a link to the pic of the pedal pad, I also threw in its length just to see if anyone with a 71-74 actually has a different pedal size.

I saw her auctions too!   :D  Actually I bought her pedal for the 71-74 but haven't received it yet.   :(   I guess procrastinating a little and not buying the one from EVW since from what I've read, it is for the automatic, not the autostick.
I guess I'll let you know what she's got when I receive my pedal cover.  I'll see if we can take a pix and put it up for all to see.

Brake pedal.  Seems to fit good, pretty sturdy material, but time will tell.  Not a good pix, but it has like a 2 piece star where the VW should be.

Hiya gleason,

Hey!  Thanks for the picture.  I was interested to see what this pad looked like.  The center emblem kinda reminds me of a Star Trek badge.  Looks to be a Brazillian (or other country) aftermarket part.
