Title: Pierberg carb
Post by: peter bouchard on May 12, 2005, 06:37:05 PM
The old Solex 34pict3 wasn't running bad but . . . when I saw the new Pierburg carb I had to get one.

I have '71 auto-stick, 1600 cc, dual port.
The new Pierburg carb has 1 vacuum tap, on the left, and no vacuum tap on the right. On the Solex, there were two vacuum taps, the one on the right had a hose going to the control valve. The left vac tap on the Solex was plugged (must go to the dual vacuum distributor, I have the single vacuum). So, the new carb has one vac tap on the left, and I ran the vacuum hose to the control valve; the clutch shifts o.k., but it does engage roughly.

I'll put the old Solex back on and reconnect to the right vac tap and see what happens. The tap on the left is definitely larger than the tap on the right. If it shifts well with the Solex, I'll take the right tap off, drill the Pierburg and put the tap in.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of project? Thanks . . .

I removed the new Pierburg carb, and re-installed the Solex 34-pict3.
Sure enough, she shifts beautifully; very smooth.
Sometime later this week, or next, I'll remove the Solex, remove the small vaccuum pipe, and install in the new Pierburg. Hopefully that will fix the harsh shifting condition with the new carb.
