Title: Re-installing the torque converter
Post by: wit61 on December 03, 2005, 03:15:30 PM
I am about to reinstall a replacement torque converter in my autostick. How much fluid should I put in the Tcon itself? What should the dipstick read if I do? What type/brand of fluid do folks use ?

Thanks

Wit61,
3.6 litres (7.5 ish US pints) total system capacity according to my VW data book. I will check my other manuals for oil type and to see whether they vary. If you don't have a drain/fill plug on the converter it's a little more difficult. I'll get back to you after the weekend as by then I will have a spare converter and can check things better.

Enjoy

Reading my two manuals, neither refer to a drain plug. They say you siphon through the aperature in the spigot. I'd pour a pint in there after draining thoroughly. Fill your reservoir up to the top mark on the dipstick, run engine for 10 seconds, stop, check and refill until no more oil is required to be added.

Type A ATF trans fluid is what the books state, but I'm using a DX 11.

All My Books say to use DEXTRON ATF Fluid....
7.6 US pints   3.6 liters

Always renew the torque converter oil seal when the torque converter is removed.

Thanks, I have some type F fluid hanging around and noticed that there are variations of Dextron (ie: II, III,). Are all of these options ok? Should I just buy the best? Sorry about the newbie questions, but this is my first foray into autostick world and I'd rather not screw up on something as simple as tranny fluid !

Wit61,
If memory serves, type F is equivalent to FORD m2C-33F fluid. This was a higher spec oil than GM Dexron at the time. Browsing my local auto parts store, I picked a bottle of Castrol ATF (forget which) and noticed on the back that the oil superseded and was suitable for anything that ran M2C-33F, and DEXRONI,II and III. Given that semi-auto oil is circulating only through the converter and support tube (ie, no valve bodies, servos or bands) any oil which meets or exceeds original spec will do the job.

I'd flush the lot as it's cheap insurance. I emptied my spare reservoir tank and the last 200 ml of oil wasn't a nice colour at all.
