hi,what a cool site!i've been strugglin to get my lil auto on the road for over a year!no one wants to touch it!even normal manual bug garages!haynes manual's a bit scetchy.now:when putting the torque convertor back onto the gearbox, does it have to go on an exact way,ie;does the gearbox have to be balanced with the t/convertor,or can it go back on any way(the reason is,todays fully auto gearboxs do have to,so does the semi auto's)i kow the bugs autobox was designed38 years ago,but vw are very clever.my bug starts and runs fine, but wont go into gear,so i'd like to eliminate that.the vacumn is pushing the the clutch arm in and out.i've just got the exact fluid type from this cool site.the gap required on the actuating arm is hard to read and get to,isn't it?thank you very much for running this!!!!!oh i'll be on the road soon, yyyyyiiiiihhhhaaaarrrr;~)
Hi,
I looked on my spare converter and flex plate and the converter has a balance weight fitted ex factory so it is balanced already. My flex plate has three small holes besides the usual big ones but I am not too sure about whether it's for balancing.
My manuals do not refer to assembling them in the specific order they came off.
I'd just bolt it all together and throw it in.
Or if you want to flash the cash, get your flex plate dynamically balanced...

thank you very much for the reply.i just needed to make sure before going any further.if nobody else checks,i wouldn't of thought they need to go on a certain way.they all can't just happen to put them back on right.so i'll just carry on,it's all back in anyway.just trying to eliminate the things wrong, thanks again for your time.
Hi,
As you know, it could be something easy, or something monstrous..
As my question asks, what have you checked thus far?
Has it shifted properly at all?
A quick list of easy first...
1. Gearstick adjustment
2. Rattling noise between gear stick and cup?
3. Plastic shift rod bushing ok?
4. Shift coupler + spring. All snug? Grub screw loose? Still connected?
Inspection plate is located under rear seat.
5. While you are there...wiggle the selector shaft that goes into the
gearbox. A little rattly? Sloppy? Wet spaghetti?
6. ATF pump ok? looking at around 40-50 psi feed pressure
7. ATF oil at the correct level?
8. Utterly no vacuum leaks anywhere?
I gather you've ripped the engine out and you've examined the torque converter?
Any of the splines on the support tube, or inside the converter where it meshes, stripped?
When you put the converter housing back on the gearbox, the clutch arm engaged properly with the throw out bearing?
Taken off the trans sump plate and had a poke and fiddle in there to check the R & P?
And....for the finale for now...did you disassemble the clutch plate/disk/TO bearing and measure the plate thickness etc?
Sorry if I sound pedantic, but blind diagnosis of problems is very hard....
The next phase unfortunately involves checking for broken hockey sticks etc etc...

hi,thanks again,i'll go through the list you've sent.when you turn the engine off,you can hear the vacumn pressure,it makes a hi pressure sound(bit like when you blow ur tyres up.)so i'd definetly say the vacumn/pnumatic sides ok,pump pressure sounds like having a gawp at.she was on the road,a guy took her to bits,in a garage, put the body outside in a bloody field, left it there for 2 years(not wise in crappy england's weather)the whole bottom8 inches were eaten away by rust.(now all replaced-mental?i must be,i felt sorry for her)they really get to you beetles don't they?anyway enuf pommie yak...gudday.
G'day..
I would check where it is hissing from when you turn it off. I have read somewhere you should be able to get a couple of more shifts after the engine has stopped because of the vacuum reservoir storing vacuum.
I've never noticed my A/S doing this after the engine has stopped.
I would listen at the control valve, and at the clutch servo diaphragm for a start.
Enjoy

thanks again for your help.its not a hissing sound you get,its more of a plonk sound, like something shooting back.i've listened for hissing all over vacuum circuit, and she's fine.i'm checkin pump pressure(when i can find someone with a gauge next)but if you loosen of the 17mm and 19mm pipes that go to the gearbox, fluild shoots out across the floor,so don't think its that either.it's process of elimination.am goin to check out the gearstick switch, this weekend(again)may have missed something.long distance diagnosis is tricky, but i'm very grateful for your help.pity your in canberra,i'm going to brisbane in october(hopefully)i'd most definetly buy you a beer or two(not all pommies are tight you know!)..yeah i'm revisitin my old area,i lived in as a kid, with my daughter(higate hill, brisbane)thanks again
Hi, I get about 6 gear changes or more after the engine is turned off...
but the ignition turned back on...
even after a few days... it shouldn't leak... but if it still works OK..
Every time I touch the gearlever with the ignition turned on...
I hear the flishhh sound... or fllump.. can't remember exactly..
As Sean said, there are splines which have to be aligned when putting the torque converter back in.... same as a real auto...
Check You oil level every now & then to make sure there is no ATF fluid getting into the engine or viseversa...
There are two small seals, back to back in the ATF/Engine Oil pump which sits under the crankshaft pulley....
