Title: I see the light...
Post by: Fireman on March 12, 2006, 03:18:12 PM
:? I just rebuilt my speedometer.  I took it apart as I broke 2 cables.  It used to bounce and make noise.  Well, at 77,700 miles, I guess it was intitled!!!

I cleaned all the old grease from the gears.  I also discovered that it was locked up.  I used some PB Blaster and freed it up.  I used the colored file folder tabs (doubled) for the warning light indicators.

I put all back together.  The speedo works great.  No more bounce and no more noise.  It now indicates a steady speed going down the road.  Is it the right speed?  Will find that out the next time I pass one of those side of the road speed indicators!!!

:?: But now the ATF warning light stays on all the time.  Before, IT NEVER CAME ON, EVEN WITH JUST THE KEY TURNED ON!!!  What's up with that?

By the way, BEFORE you take your speedo out for anything, take digital photos of all connections.  Then, write down where all wires are connected.  I did this and it makes putting it back in SO MUCH EASIER!!!

Fireman,
Find a wiring diagram for your year of beetle. It'll have one or two temp senders depending on year. They (or it) are located on the trans, under the starter on the passenger side. Check the wires, connections etc all the way up to the speedo. You may have a short somewhere, or a PO has hooked it up stupidly (or something else!!). One other possibility is the sender(s) is/are fried.

Grab a continuity tester (like a pen with a bulb in it and an earth clip) and go for your life. The wires from the trans come out under the back seat to hook up to the main harness.

Enjoy

Today I decided I was going to find out WHY the ATF light was staying on.  I found the 2 sensors on the side of the XMISSION and I disconnected them.  Light stayed on.

I then decided to pull the light holder itself from the rear of the speedometer.  It went out.

I put it back in but I turned it so it would slide in easier and follow the groove that was in it.  Now, remember, this entire bulb holder is plastic.  All the others on there for the other lights are metal.  When it was in, I turned the key on and no light.

I then did the wire check at the rear grounding the terminal.  Wifey was sitting in the car with the key on.  When I grounded it, the light came on.

So, now we SEEM to be back to normal and the light does not come on with the key anymore, ALTHOUGH I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT WAS DESIGNED NOT TO COME ON UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING SO YOU WOULD AT LEAST KNOW THE BULB WASN'T BURNT OUT!!!

Correction on my last...

The light went out when I disconnected from the sensors on the Xmission.

Fireman,
Great work on the electrical debbils
Probably a handy thing to do from time to time for all us A/S owners. I know I'll be checking mine now to make sure all the bulbs are OK. At least I know the gennie one is OK
