What are the wires from the control valve ran to? I would also like to know the wiring path for the cut off valve i.e. what wires connect to the center prong and to the angled prong? I have a 1973 VW Super with a 1600 engine.

Hi,
One side of the solenoid should be fed by a black power wire. The other prong has a grey wire that runs to your neutral switch and from there to underneath your back seat. It enters a connector and the exit wire runs from this to your gearstick. The circuit is actuated when the upper gearstick rod is pushed down and it earths against the lower contact point, firing the solenoid.
A big disclaimer here :
This is the way it's mean't to be but PO's may have hacked and slashed everything in their attempts to fix things. You may or may not have the white 8 amp fuse and holder in the grey wire. It is supposed to sit in a bracket on one of the coil mount bolts.
www.thesamba.com has a series of wiring diagrams you can look at. You have to look for the "supplement" section to find the autostick stuff.

I've completely rewired My Beetle... and it didn't really need rewiring...
I just pulled all the wires out and replaced them with heavier wires...
I soldered all connections and used shrink wrap where I could...
I then found the old wires were OK and not contaminated at all...
so I could have soldered them... You usually cannot solder old wires as they are usually contaminated.... due to old age and the environment..
so I cannot help with wire colors etc....
plus VWs destined for the USA [North America] have much different wiring to Beetles shipped to Australia...
Normal Manual Beetles were CKD Beetles assembled using many Australian made parts..
Autosticks were fully imported ... made in Western Germany... where all the good Beetles come from lol... :lol: :lol:
Most Beetles have suffered a bit of rewiring during their over 30 year life span.... some are a mess.... its usually done by the owner or a Non VW Mechanic....
