Title: New to Autostick
Post by: EricE on April 11, 2006, 10:29:15 PM
I hope to have our new toy registered shortly, just need to get some numbers.
As far as the shifter, is the electrical contact the only real difference, that is would a standard shifter work if you were to activate the clutch by another method?

Thanks in advance

Eric

Congratulations on your AS purchase!  Post some pics when you get a chance.

The following is from the "How it works" section under Technical in this site:

"Gears are changed by a conventional gear lever. The gear lever, however,is connected to the clutch in such a way that soon as the lever is moved longitudinally(i.e in gear selection direction) the clutch disengages."

More on this can be found here:

Good Luck!

Hiya Eric,

"would a standard shifter work if you were to activate the clutch by another method?"

Like a clutch pedal, perhaps?  Maybe you might want to look a little more closely at a manual transmission.

The compound shift lever used in an AutoStick is unique.  It contains a set of electrical points which triggers the clutch action.  Consequently, it is not interchangeable with a manual shift lever.  When the points are properly gapped, the shifting action (via the AS shift lever) is consistent and true.  To use a "shadetree" approach to this function would seem to be a waste of time.

If you are having problems with the shift lever, I would recommend that you fix the lever you have or get another AS shift lever.  That would be a LOT less work, probably less money (and give you a much better end result) than any alternative.
