I just purchased a 74 Autoshift Super Beetle. It has a similar problem that I have read about on this forum ..... Bangs into reverse and first! It also sometimes grinds when trying to go into first and reverse.
It's engine number is AH 120545; carb is a Solex H30/31 PICT and the dist. a number 231 178 009.
From what I have read on this forum I know this is not the original setup and I have a vacuum problem. Does anyone have a set up like this and could tell me what port to connect the small vacuum hose to. Looking down the carb it looks like it is below the valve but I'm not sure without taking the carb off.
Currently it is connected to the lowest port on the bottom front of the Solex. There are three additional ports on this carb that are blocked. Two on the front, "rear of the car" and one on the left side "drivers side". The ports on the front are different sizes.
Also the vacuum hoses from the servo valve seem to be very flexible with the steel reinforcement under the cloth exposed and rusting in places.
Can someone tell me where I can buy new vacuum lines for this application, the length and ID size. My local auto parts store had suggested useing woven cloth gas line? He has 3.5, 5, 7, 10 & 12mm.
I love my Beetle!
Thanks,
Dave
Dave,
Hoses first.
You must use reinforced hose for the control valve hoses. Period. The stock stuff has wire wound into it to prevent collapse.
The hose part no is N 20-390.12 or n20390.1, 12mm internal diameter. Type 2 Bay Kombi's use this as brake booster hose. It will have sufficient strength. You need one piece 590mm long, one piece 470mm long and a third piece. Best to buy a 1.5 metre length. Insist on booster hose or better. Hydraulic shops have vacuum rated hose that are imperial (generally in the US) that can be used (15/32 or 31/64). Search the Parker Hannefin website.
The small hose from your carb to control valve is 3.5mm ID stuff. Doesn't need to be reinforced.
Someone has definitely slapped on that 30 Pict, probably because the original 34 Pict 3 gave up. So, looking at the engine, the pipe on the left hand side of the carb facing left is for your distributor. Your Control Valve connection must be above the throttle plate, and is just below the narrowest point of the venturi on a 34 Pict 3 and is on the upper right side of the carb pointing at you.
Find one that suits on the 30 Pict.
Post a pic of the carb and I or others should be able to tell you which one to use.
Then after that we'll see if you still have problems.

I used hydraulic hose for the ATF lines and I can't remember what sort of hose for the vacuum... but its not cheap heater hose...
Finding good hose is a problem as You don't know how old it is when its bought from the shop... and many are made as cheaply as possible...
I'll keep that kombi type 2 hose in mind...

Hi Lee and Volkenstein,
Thanks for the feedback!
I won't get a chance to work on my VW untill this weekend. In the meantime I will try to find a source in New Hampshire for the hydraulic hose. I have been unsuccessful in finding hose reinforced with the steel spring. I did find hose reinforced with nylon: Rubber / Nylon / Woven cloth outer jacket. The cost was about 2 US dollars a foot. They said it was gas line but it might of been hydraulic brake line???
Where can I purchase the type 2 brake booster hose?
Also is the number you gave me a VW part number?
I have found an autoshift transmission and control valve in a local salvage yard that I can purchase for 100 US dollars. Not sure if it is any good but feel I should grab it for parts.
Is that a reasonable price?
I will try moving the small hose to another vacuum port this weekend. I hope I find the hose by that time.
I really appreciate your help.
Dave
Dave,
Couldn't find the link but found another shop. BMW used this as well.
www.germanparts.com
go to a search section and type in : 34331115926
19.95 per metre! +P & P....
www.belmetric.com : Part no RH12W - it actually says "wire reinforced" and the bus guys use this too. In their Silicon and high pressure catalog (page 27).
That part No : N 20 390 1 is a VW part number if you order from a big shop catering to buses. I think it denotes "accessory" part or something..
About the trans. Does it come with a flex plate and control valve? Torque converter? All the tanks and such? Is the engine mounting face pounded in? Unless you do a personal inspection 100 okay. At least if the bellhousing is on you'll get a throwout bearing.....

Hiya Dave,
I thought I might hop into this thread.
About the hosing............ The line you are describing in your last post is, indeed, designed to carry gasoline. It is NOT suitable for vacuum hosing. The original (OEM) hosing looked a good deal like the nylon braided gas hose, but the actual braiding was steel. That steel prevented collapse under vacuum draw. The easiest way to replace that hose is to visit a hydraulics shop. Be sure to take along a piece of the old hose. They will round up a hose to fit your application which is steel reinforced. Usually this reinforcement is in the form of a spring molded into the body of the hose. It will not be OEM, but it will easily do the job.
And the transaxle.........Volkenstein makes some very good points with his advice. If the contents of the bellhousing (torque converter, flex plate, clutch disc, pressure plate, and especially the throwout bearing) are there and appear to be in reasonably good shape - jump on it. Actually it's the contents of the bellhousing which should be of primary concern. The rest of the stuff (transaxle, half shafts, servo, tanks, control valve) can all be replaced without too much difficulty, but the bellhousing items are getting VERY scarce.
Best of luck!
Hi All,
Today must be my lucky day!
I bought my first VW special tool from Ralph at Belmetric when I owned a Rabbit Diesel in the 80's. They are located in Massachusetts about 8 miles from my home. I will call them tomorrow to see if the steel reinforced 12 mm hose is in stock.
If it ever stops raining, I will be able to change the hoses and check for the correct vacuum port this weekend.
Volkenstein..... Thanks!
I will keep you all updated on my progress.
I did purchase the transmission and control valve. They look pretty clean. I will take a closer look at them next week.
Thanks again,
Dave
Dave,
If they have it, could you post back on whether the hose is comparable to what's on your bug? Also a price per foot or metre as well?
Pics are even better!
You might want to pick up a hose clamp or two just in case the VW ones have rusted together and the head snaps off....and yes it's happened to me twice :(
Enjoy
