Hi,

I am from New Zealand and have recently had a little trouble with my 71 1302 Super.
The other night it would not engage gear, and after removing the gearstick found that the wire from the control switch had broken off.

I have replaced the broken wire , re-soldered it and reassembled, with 99% success. I need to fine adjust the selector as gear selection is now difficult. I worked out that adjusting the two large bolts on the stick adjusts the contact but is there a fine adjustment somewere to get it just right? Or a measurement that I need to adjust to ??

Hi Jason,
Its NOT that easy to remove the gearlever in any VW and put it back the same...
The plate under the gearlever has two sides that stick up...
I hope You didn't take this plate off....
as it has to be just about perfect so You can select all the gears...
especially reverse.....
The plate I believe is different to manual beetles etc...
You will have to experiment to get it right...
In a manual You push the plate to the Left hand side...
I'm presuming You have to do the same.... with the AS one....
I can't remember seeing the AutoStick gear shifter plate in any manuals
and I have 12 of those....
They just show the manual gearlever....

Jason,
        To adjust the contact gap (Done this twice...) as per book....

Undo the bottom "M15" so that the fat part the gearstick goes into is free to move. Screw the fat part down until the upper section of the gearstick is against the contact and doesn't have movement.

Now back it off 1/2 turn. The upper gearstick slot in the fat part should align with the tunnel lengthways. In or out (preferably out) to adjust from the point you just reached.

Tighten the lower "M15" up against the fat part.

Before you do this next part, how is your bushing and shift coupler? Check them as they can be sloppy and adjusting the stick position will be much harder...

This is from the book and I haven't done it myself...Shift into "L". Check gearstick angle. About 10 degrees toward the rear seat. If not, loosen the two 8mm bolts until it does. I will assume you have an RHD car for this next bit. Slip a very fine wire or screwdriver against the stop plate from the passenger side until it contact's the stick. Tighten bolts. Check selection of all gears. Sounds simple :roll: but you never know...

Hi Sean,

I didn't know about that part...
I don't know whether I have taken My gearlever off...
Memory too bad... but I do have two spare gearlevers...
You can find them very cheap at swap meets as no one knows what they are...
I have see the Auto gearlever in Manual cars too....
the large rubber boot usually is a giveaway....
I wonder if they are just screwed in until there is no movement...
I have seen new ATF pipes at swapmeets too...

OK - it has taken a while but all sorted  8)

Thanks volkenstein, the half turn anti-clock wise did the trick perfectly. Also, while I made the fine adjustments I had the car running so I could check the shift into each gear. This helped to get it just right

We now shift very well = thanks to all that responded
