Just bought my 74 AS Ghia. The engine was crap, so I bought a longblock with flexplate and pump on it already. Swapped everything out and replaced anything that looked like it was on its way otu. I also got 40mm. Kadrons. The operation was a success. The engine sounds great. I can't get it in to gear though and drive my pride and joy all over town. There is a hose that runs from one manifold to the other I added unions for the 2 most fount vacuum lines. That might be one reason why. I suspect the electrical connection in the back of the control valve is where the problem lies I the single carb had a starter inhibitor swich on it, or at least thats where one of the connections were. Before I bought the dual carbs I checked and it seemed like a few of you have them. Any ideas?
Hiya Nulli,
Well, first off, let me state the obvious...................
You are dealing with a customized set-up. In part, that means that all bets are off concerning how things SHOULD work. I'm sure that you realize this, but it does have implications for fixing your present situation.
I really don't know if you are getting proper vacuum from your Kadron crossover vacuum tube. If I were you, I'd measure the vacuum you are getting and then compare that with a stock set-up. That would give you some important info and a good idea if your problem with shifting into gear lies in this area.
As for your control valve solenoid..........that's a pretty easy check. Just pull it off the control valve (4 screws) and test it on 12 volts. The center rod should plunge out when you apply 12 volts.
In any event, I'd go about it this way.......... check out your vacuum system (all the way through from manifolds to servo) and if it is OK then go all the way through your shifting electrics ( from shift lever contact points to control valve soleniod). Someplace along those two lines you will find your problem.
Make sure you have power going to your vacume selonoid, and also make sure that the other wire is getting grounded when you apply pressure to the gearshift. On my Trike, I had the grounding wire come off of the shifter switch last year, and I was stuck for 3 minutes. lol With the key on, if you apply pressure to the shifter, and you don't hear the clutch diaphram pull the clutch, your problem is probably in that area. Make sure you have vacume in the resivoir too... I switched intakes on my Trike to get rid of that dual heat riser stuff, and had to braze in my own fitting into the manifold. Im wondering if your Kadron manifolds came with a vacume fitting on the left one to supply the clutch system. Dennis
