Hi,
I was just looking at a site that listed VW Beetle CV joint axles as being 16 1/4 inches in length...
some are 18 3/4 inches long???
I just remembered that I did My Sons CV Joints/ axles the same time as I did mine... I never thought to measure the axles...
His car isn't an autostick..
Anyone ever measured an autostick axle...??
I'm just wondering that maybe they aren't the same..
they would have to very close if different??

Lee,
I'll check my books tonight as I seem to recall seeing a section on axle lengths/CV sizes in one of them.

Hi Sean,
I've seen that some Kombis [type 2] have two different length axles
maybe on their automatic gearboxes...
I see in the US, You can buy axles with longer splines and the cv joints actually slide on the splines...
Naturally the axles are hardened and expensive...
I don't think You could do that with standard axles...
cheers

Lee,
For all IRS type 1 axles, the Bentley says it is supposed to be 16.358" long. A catalogue I have lists the same drive shaft assembly No for the left & right. This would tie in with measuring aspects of rear wheel alignment, which uses the centreline of the engine as a reference point.
Also, the book said that you are supposed to have "a" and "b" measurements. One is the length between the outer faces of the CV (close to the axle) and the other is the actual length of the axle overall.
Enjoy
