Title: depressing the stick
Post by: hakgun on October 04, 2006, 12:41:39 PM
hi everyone,

I have a 74 Autostick, and I wonder if it is necessary to depress the gear stick while changing the gear from low to first, first to second or to rear gear. I don't need to depress the stick.

is there a problem with my gear box? If yes what may it be

Thanks alot
Olgun

Hiya Hakgun,

Changing the forward ranges (gears) in your AutoStick should be the same feel as changing the forward gears in a manual transmission.  That is to say, you should not have to put downward pressure on the shift knob (as you would in shifting into reverse) when shifting from Low to First and then to Second.

The combination of the weight of your hand on the shift knob and the movement of the shift lever itself is enough to actuate the shifting mechanism.  What is actually occuring is that an electrical contact is made in the shift points which are located inside your shift lever.  The clearance between these points is very narrow and very little force is needed to close that gap and make contact.
