This is embarassing. I finally fired my '71 up today after months of
disassembly. I am pretty sure I hooked up the generator wires wrong, but am hoping someone can confirm it. I have attached the big Red &white wire to DF and the small green one to D+. The gen lite stays on, so I know something is wrong. The ground wire is ok.
Johnr,
Red/White D+, Green DF. The little brown wire terminates on the voltage regulator.

Bless you & thanks!
I did it! Switched the gen wires & everything works fine. I was scared to touch the shift lever because I just KNEW that weird set-up wouldn't shift.
How the hell does it work? Sure doesn't seem like it would.
I finally got up the nerve & all gears shifted smoothly. It made a loud honking noise which was music to my ears. Now, if it ever quits raining here, I'm going for a drive!
Johnr,
Eh? Honking noise? At least it shifts smooth! Did you feel the clutch engage when you took your hand off the stick? And I guess I should ask...was the motor going? Not being smarmy
I guess after all the work and trials etc, maybe just around the block until you are happy with the speed of engagement (which you can adjust yourself to suit) and that the clutch/trans etc is behaving and not slipping or anything untoward.
Congrats on ending a long hard slog!
Enjoy

Some adjusting may be in order. The engine was running, I didn't feel the clutch engage but the car moved when I goosed the gas.
Hopefully I'll take it out today for a drive & see how things go.
JohnR,
I'm presuming the honking noise was the clutch servo working..
which lets You put it into gear...
if the car doesn't jerk when You put it in gear...
thats great.... JohnR
Hope everything goes well for you...

It used to jerk. Now, with the new clutch, it just gives a little nudge you can barely feel. I am really pleased. :D
Hiya John,
Always glad to see another AutoStick hit the road here in Oregon.
Got a question for you...................you mentioned that you have a new clutch installed. Since the clutch components are so difficult to locate, I'm wondering if you could fill us in on just what you replaced and where you got your parts.
I took the bell housing to 2nd street foreign car repair in coos bay.
They rebuilt the clutch and reassembled it. I got the wheel cyls & brake shoes there and the torque conv. seal.
The servo kit I got from evwparts.com. Advice I got all I needed from
the good guys on this website & my three manuals, Chilton's, Haines, etc.
Hi JohnR,
You say they rebuilt the clutch..
do you know if they replaced the clutch plate with another??
or replaced the linings on the old clutch plate..
do You know any part numbers they used??
sorry to be a pain...
very interested in what they did....

You are not being a pain. Here goes:
Part Brand #
torque conv. seal: VW 001301083B $34
Trans mounts, rear VW 113301263 30
Clutch VW 001141031A 125
Brake hdwe. 118.33012 $11.50
Brake hdwe VW K2169A $15
Brake shoes front GR 10140 29.95
" " rear ABS 10153 25
Clamp kit (muffler) 111298051A 5.00 (2.50 ea)
Exhaust gaskets (2) VW 111251261B 3.00 for both
Heater Hose VW 028129087A 4.00
Everything got squashed together, tho I didn't send it that way!
I sent the part name followed by the brand (if supplied) then the part number, then the price in US dollars.
Honking!, mine makes more of a farting noise.
Perhaps your brand of petrol is not agreeing with the engine!
Seriously, if it shifts properly, you shouldn't worry.
You could say that my servo sounds like a "duck fart"!
I only use 99RON petrol old boy, mind you at 19 to the (larger) Imperial gallon, this can hurt at £4.50 a gallon, that's about $8.50 per imperial gallon, so about $7 per US gallon-and you lot complain that petrol is expensive at $3 a gallon, you don't realise how lucky you are!
I hear you, bro! Don't forget our taxes are lower too!
Yeh, great! Is Bush worse than Blair?
I would wish they both took a harder line toward the muslims.
I admire Mr. Blair. He is a stubborn S.O.B. to his credit. Mr. Bush is starting to piss me off, but I still prefer him to what we almost got.
I also feel the pope should stop kissing up to the camel-jockeys and call for another crusade! By the way, if you're a muslim, no hard feelings.
