:( When I let go of my shift knob, The car jerks foward hard. When I put the shift knob into low gear, the engine starts to die like it is in gear but it is not. I don't know what to fix. Here is what I have tried with no sucess.Replaced large vac hoses. checked on placement of small vac hose( seems to be above butterfly in carb) . The first thing I tried was to adjust the screw under the plastic cap on top of the control valve. My next thought is the control valve is bad. What do you think?
Hiya Ray,
First off, welcome to the forum!
Your problem is not likely to be a bad control valve. That's not to say it's impossible; just not very probable. I've seen my share of control valves and I have yet to run into one that is not functioning. A pretty dependable component. However, they can get out of adjust.
If you have tried to adjust your control valve with little or no results, then you most likely do NOT have your small vacuum hose hooked up to the proper port on the caburetor.
:D I just read the article on vac line placement on the 34 pict 3 carb. I went out and looked at my carb and the small vac hose is on the left side and the right side is pluged. I will have to drill it out as conradk said in his article. I feel this is my problem. I will let you know how it goes .
My car is a 1970 ghia AS
Hi,
Yes, it does sound like You have too much vacuum... in the small vacuum hose....
I've tried just about everything to try to reduce the vacuum in the hose...
somethings worked for a short time... [nail - screw]
adjusting the control valve , just adjusts the time it takes for the clutch to engage...
My Weber carburetor has too much vacuum, I also have to drill a hole out.
I have adjusted the control valve so the clutch operates slower, and it still Thumps into gear, but its now Not audible outside the car...
It was audible outside the car before...
If You disconnect the small vacuum line...
it will take a few seconds to engage...
which isn't good if You have just pulled onto a highway.... with other traffic...
My wheels keep digging holes in My gravel driveway...
although not as bad as it was...
cheers
