Hi, I need to replace a seal that is leaking on the converter. I talked to someone today that said it was real hard to do and you needed a special tool to do it. Any help would be great Thanks, Rob

Have a look at My websites and You will see the shape of the torque converter oil seal.
You just need something that will fit over the seal, towards the outer edge
Many people use sockets to knock the seal in... [any seal]
although a socket to fit over the T/C seal would be very large...
I can't remember how i installed mine years ago.
Maybe you could cut a hole in a piece of wood with a hole saw,
and knock it in....
the wood shouldn't distort the seal either...
make sure You align the splines in the torque converter when replacing it..

I drilled a 2 3/8 inch hole in a piece of plywood and used that. Worked really well. You have to be careful removing the old seal as it will pop off easily if done right. don't drill holes in it like I did. Just pull it off with pliers , or pop it off with a screwdriver, and don't damage the metal underneath.
I don't have a socket large enough to handle the job, either. I thought to use a piece of pipe, but I don't know of a standard piece that would have the proper ID to do the job. So I took it to a shop - I don't know what they used but they were reputable as they knew exactly what I was doing without asking, and have done other good work for me on my Ghia. I didn't think to use a board as I didn't think it would have enough (pardon the expression) ass to get the seal seated. Too soft. But I'll give it a go now.
John I've got a pic of my torque converter installation on a more recent thread here, would you take a look at that pic and let me know what you think?
