Title: Squeeling Autostick
Post by: wildfamily1 on September 03, 2003, 05:58:59 AM
How cool! A site devoted to Autostick V-dubs. I thought I was the last on earth to actually own one.

Recently my 1968 Autostick began emitting an very loud "squealing" noise when the transmission is in neutral. The car continues to shift fine and drives like normal, but in neutral and when shifting between gears it "squeals" and sounds awful. The sound reminds me of a squealing a/c belt or something, but sounds more metalic.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I can't seem to find a vw mechanic who has any experience with Autostick transmissions! Help!!

Hiya Wild,

I answered your question over on another forum.

Do be sure to check out the vacuum system and its many connections.  Another respondent offered that you might check your gearbox for proper gear oil level.  Do the same with your ATF.

But know this.........if these three suggestions pan out, you almost certainly will have pull the transmission and likely tear into the case itself.  Major work by any standard.

A final suggestion.  Call German Transaxle at 541.382.7723.  Ask for Ken (the owner of the shop).  Describe your symptoms to him and ask for a quickie diagnosis.  He has taken apart and put together more AutoStick Transaxles than you can imagine.  He'll probably be able to put a finger on the problem for you.  But I'm betting that you won't like the diagnosis.
