Stainless Steel braided hoses

I'm thinking of replacing all my ATF lines (rubber and steel) with SS braided hoses from places like http://www.summitracing.com and http://www.jegs.com but I don't know what size hose to get.  Also does anybody know what size are the banjo fittings?

I've found some AN to metric fittings for the oil pump and going to wrap the lines with this stuff called "firebraid" or something like it for the lines near the exhaust.

Hiya Untitled,

Now I'm not at all familiar with SummitRacing or Jegs, but I have replaced my original metal and steel ATF tubing with braided stainless steel.  When I was ready to do the deed I simply took off the original stuff and carted it on down to a local company specializing in hydraulics.  Gave 'em the old tubing/hosing, told 'em about the application and in an hour and a half they had custom-built the hoses for my car.  Exactly the same stuff as the online guys advertise but built to exacting standards.  Fit and perform perfectly.  Even the ATF supply which runs right next to the muffler.
I'd suggest that you at least check out this route before attempting to determine sizes of fittings by e-mail and paying outrageous prices (maybe) for "racing" equipment.  These hydraulic supply outfits are all over the place and if you're in a town of moderate size you should be able to find one easily.

Thanks for the info on using a hydraulics shop.  How did you run your lines through the rear tin into the engine compartment?  I don't think the tin that's in my car is original because the hole for the line was cut out rather crudely.

Hiya Untitled,

It sounds like you have a "replacement" rear tin which was "customized" to fit an AS application.
In the original AS tin there is a stamped hole for the pass-through of the ATF line just to the left of the left side heater hose.  The line itself is secured at that point by a nut which overlaps the hole in the tin.  When the hydraulics shop manufactured my line for me they simply included that tubing section from the old line.  So my new braided hose routes through the tin (and is attached to the tin) just like the old one.
Take a look at your Bentley on page 6 of the Automatic Stick Shift section.  Look at Figure 3-1.  That will give you a rough idea (they have a pressure gauge hooked up in there which is not, of course, normally there) of what that connection and fitting look like.  Sounds like you'll have to do some "customizing" of your own.

So for cars with original tin you have to unscrew the ATF hose and the nut to be able to remove the rear tin?

Hiya Untitled,

Exactly so!

Another source to try for these lines would be www.classictube.com they claim to be the source for any hose application.  I've been thinking about going the same route, with SS lines, but have not had the oppurtunity to check them out yet.  Good luck.
