Jeff

My son was driving his car when it popped out of gear and stalled out.
after getting it restarted he went to fill up the car with gas.
when he went to leave he had a hard time restarting it again.less than a block later his car stalled and would not restart, but when it finally got it started it would not shift it would grind the gears. It has no gear ranges it seems hard to get into 1st,R,2nd it only grinds. Last spring I replaced the contact point, clutch servo, and switched contol valve assembly as the 1st so called mechanic who worked on my car said it was bad. I still have the one thats origanal to the car how can I test it to see if it is actually bad? Does anyone know where I can find the rebuild kit for it as I have exhausted all my options, and was told by everyone it is a rare part to even find.

Thank You, Jeff

Hiya Jeff,

Welcome to the forum.

Last first.............. rebuild kits for the control valve no longer exist.  However, it is rare for a control valve to simply give up the ghost.  A gradual change in shifting performance is a much more likely symptom.

The control valves themselves are not all that rare.  To find one may take a bit of looking but they are out there.

And about your present problems.  First, know this.......shifting in an AutoStick is an electrical operation with an assist by a vacuum system.  When you have vacuum problems you will typically encounter symptoms like very slow shifts, very fast shifts.  Grinding usually indicates that the vacuum system is trying to shift, but the electrical operation has not completed.

I would think that you have an electrical problem.
