Removing Engine form a '69

I've removed the 2 top & 2 bottom nuts on my '69 bug along with disconnecting all the other bits and pieces the manual lists for engine removal, including the rear tin.  Still can't pull the engine back and away from the tranny. The engine moves freely [its not connected to the frame], but the tranny moves with it.  I've wiggled and pulled with no luck.   If you've done this before and can advise,  be much appreciated.

ive recently pulled the engine on my 69 did not have this problem if the four bolts holding it there are removed it should at least slide back, you didnt mention the torque converter bolts this is something i ovelooked and may be the cause of the prob you need to un bolt the torque converter from the engine before it will drop out to do this there is alittle opening near the starter motor and as the engine is rotated you will see four little bolts that need to be removed due to the clearence needed when sliding engine back, your torque converter may be stuck on the transmission and hence the engine not slide from the transmission.

Got the engine out [once I got the correct bottom bolts - thanks for the replies]!  Pulled the torque converter.  On to the next step in changing the clutch disc in my '69.  Looks like the tranny must come out as well??  If you've done this before, I'd appreciate your expertise, tips, an outline of the basic steps before I start. :?:  Thanks!

I don't have a site for you, BUT......................  by far and away the easiest and most straightforward outline for pulling an engine would be in Robert Bentley's Official VW Service Manual.  Look for the orange cover.  It will walk you through the entire process in 20 easy-to-follow steps.
And........if you don't have this manual already, you should go out and get it as quickly as you can.  Best price is at www.vwbooks.com

Hi Danny,

If and when you do get the clutch plate swapped can you post a step by step on what you did and how you got on, it is something I anticipate doing in the next year or so and it's good to hear experiences and pitfalls first hand.

Also I have heard (but it may be untrue) that a stock clutch plate can be replaced in it, maybe you could let us know.

will do.
wont be for a few months though as i am interstate with work. but it is high on the list of things to do as soon as i get home as i think mine is soaked in oil, i think maybe when i removed engine to change heads to twin port ones, that there is a seal that i could have dislodged and oil has seeped onto the clutch.

i have also heard that you can replace the clutch disk with a manual disk its just a little bit thicker i think, but i will find out for sure and let you know
