very heavy clunk into reverse gear

I have a 1996 Golf 1600 GL Full Auto which clunks very badly into reverse gear.It almost shakes the front of the car off with a thud.It does not always happen but most of the time it does.
When selecting any of the forward gears ie Drive it seems to have some from of damper that allows the gear to be selected gently,this does not happen with reverse most of the time but then sometimes it will select gently.Is there some sort of damping valve and is it internal or external.Can anyone help please?
