Type of ATF for Autostick

I recently purchased a 69 bug AS.  I am just getting through a complete rebuild and am at the point where I need to add back in the ATF.  I have no owners manual, but a friend says his autostick owners manual called for "Dexron R"?  This site calls for using "Type A ATF oil".  I can find no such ATF with  a "Type A" designation at a parts store.  Moreover, in doing some research on the web, it looks like Dexron and Type A are indeed not interchangeable.   I do know that ATF's types are radically different and that using the wrong one is an invite to disaster.

So, what kind of ATF should I use and where can I find it?

Hiya bfleck,

Well, it's been a few years since 1969 and in that time lubricating oils have been reformulated to meet ongoing changes in machinery.  Not unexpectedly Type A has undergone some changes of its own.  To make a long story short, I have been using Valvoline ATF Dexron III.  Works just like Type A used to.  You should be able to find that at a FLAPS without problem.
