My newly acquired '69 Bettle has to be forced into reverse over the sound of grinding gears.  Advice from the previous owner - bear down & push hard.   Any thoughts on where to start looking for a real cure? :(

It sounds like a typical problem with VW Automatics... It might be possible that the clutch servo will be unproperly adjusted, but you also have to remember that VW Automatics aren't as effective at changing gears as a Manual...

In order to change to Reverse, you have to press the Stick Shift and do it slowly...

Good look with it.

I had this problem with my car also.  Here's what i do:  when i want to shift in to reverse i depress the gear-lever, shift into "L" (with the lever still depressed) then shift into Reverse.  Works every time for me.
