I'm preping my car for paint and its going to be painted with the fenders off.  Now I am just wondering if there are any problems with unhooking the vacum tank and ATF tank other than leaking ATF fluid.  Also does anyone know what thread the atf line is, the short flex one that has the banjo fitting on the other end, so I can plug it while the tank is off?

Hiya Dean,

Sounds as if your project is coming right along.  Painting it Cobalt Blue again?

Unhooking the tanks won't be a problem at all.  In fact, I'd suggest you do just that.  While you have them off you'll have a chance to inspect for rust or developing pinholes, clean, and paint.  I had mine pressure tested the last time I had them off.  Gives a little peace of mind to know for sure that they are still sound.

I don't know the thread pitch of the "other" end of the banjo fitting hose (In fact I don't even have this piece on my car anymore.  I replaced all of that with a custom made hose), but I do have an idea you might find useful.  When I have had occasion to take out the ATF tank I have simply plugged the hose line with a golf tee.  Works great!

Great, just what I wanted to know and yes I am looking to go with the original Cobalt Blue.  I just found out tho, PPG has 3 different color blues for the original Cobalt Blue VW code.  I got a spray can today to coverup body work, just for visualization purposes, and it is closer to a sky blue than cobalt.  They also don't have paint chips for old VW colors so I couldn't be sure which to go with.  Anyway I'll take some pics of the car before I finish up the body work just for progress sake.
