Hi,

I know that some, Auto Stick bugs had a park slot, some don't.

I am going to try and find mine this weekend (it wouldn't surprise me if quite a few stick shift owners didn't know if it was there or not)

If I have got one how do I get to it? I know it would be on the left of 1st and reverse, do you push down and slide left or lift and slide left or... :?:

Cheers

I believe the whole park "gear" depends on the year, I could be wrong but I believe it was 71-74 had the park and 68-70 did not?

Hiya Kev and Dean,

The park feature was not added until the 1973 production year.  Ostensibly it was supposed to be available from the start of the production year.  In actuality, VW still had AutoStick parts from the previous year they needed to use up.  So, early 73 AutoSticks may have park, but then again, they may not.

In order to accomodate park a new shift lever, new shift plate, new selector shaft, springs and sleeves were added to the car.

I have not fiddled with a 73 or newer.  But the addition of a new shift plate and new parts for the selector shaft inside the transaxle tells me that the park feature is unique to 73 and newer transmissions.  Perhaps somebody out there with a later model AS can fill s in on the shift pattern.

Park was introduced in 73. you can easily tell if you have it by the nose cone of the trans. 73 and above has 3 studs for the mount instead of two the mount bolts to the underside of the torsion tube instead of off a bracket. also the rear mounts will be smaller. Park is in the same position as reverse on a manual tranny. push down left then back. 73 also has a slot in the shift tube elbow with a pin on the shifter, shift tube is a few inches shorter than older models. a 73 can be mounted into an older pan but you have to use a solid front mount. you may need to change the shifter to get to the park feature I'm not sure my car didn't havfe a shifter so I modified a 72 tube to work with the 73 shifter that I got with the trans.
