I have a '70 Ghia AS.  I know VW put an Automatic Stickshift emblem on Beetles (at least for some years).  Does anyone know if there ever an AS emblem on Ghias?  Mu Ghia has what appears to be two small holes (that are filled in) on the right hand (passenger) side of the engine lid, approximately at the same location as the Volkwagen emblem on the left side.

The KGP&R Catalog seems to indicate an AS emblem should go there.  I have never seen a Ghia with this emblem.  Has anyone else?

Hiya Nova,

I cannot give you a definitive answer.  However I can share a couple of pieces of information which may shed some light on the issue.

1.  I am currently involved in a project to replicate a rear window decal for AutoStick equipped Bugs.  This decal was used by VW in 69, 70, and 71.

2.  It replaced the decklid script emblem which was used only in 1968.  I have been told that KGs also sported this decal in the years mentioned.

Take it for what it's worth.

My '69 Ghia has an "AUTOMATIC stick shift" emblem on the engine lid just to the left of the license plate.
I have a picture of it on the car before I took the car apart to restore it, I could attempt to figure out how to post it if you are interested.

Karmann Ghias are being imported into Australia, from the USA, as the cabriolets were never sold here and the coupes only around 1958-60...
so Karmann Ghias are very rare in Australia...
I saw a number of LHD Ghias recently at a VW show, they were all 1970+
models and some had the AutoStick badge on the rear....
Beetles never had that badge here in Australia....
Just VW Automatic...
I do know of one beetle that has that badge, but where it came from I don't know... I know some of the badges are being imported from the US..

I don't know for sure if that AS script on the left of the license plate was ever 'stock' on a Ghia, but I definitely intend to put one there.  I located an NOS version, and sure enough the holes for the Volkswagen script that went there are exactly in the same place.

I think it will look way cool...'Tiptronic' from the stone age.
