Hi again I've found another switch on my 68 AS bug that when I turn it on it turns on a green light in the speedo (no its not the indicator) The light is by the 20km mark and the switch is under the dash any ideas?
Many thanks Ant.

Hiya Ant,

I have the same exact set-up on my 70.  The switch controls the rear window defroster grid.  The green light is the indicator light that the defroster is operating.

And..............under your rear seat (behind the front passenger seat in a RHD) you should find a relay for the rear window defroster.  This relay sometimes goes bad due to accumulated rust/moisture.  Most of the defroster grids have long since gone to pieces and are no longer conductive.

Finally.......odd, but I thought the 68 did NOT have a rear window defroster.  Maybe that was USA only?

Hi Mike. Thanks for the reply mate. Yeah my bug came with a load of extras when it was originaly sold heated rear window padded dash etc. My heated window can't be connected up then as it doesn't work but the grid is in  perfect condition. My car is lhd so will the relay be in the same place and can you buy replacements? as it would be handy to have it working now the winter is here again. Thanks for all your help mate.

Hiya Ant,

The relay is in the same place.  Only, of course, behind the driver's seat.  The relay is a standard 12 volt electrical relay, so you really shouldn't have any big problem finding one to replace it.  I like to use OEM equipment, so, when I go to shows and swaps I usually spend a few quid on old relays.  You might consider that also.
