Finding gears

Okay, after a bit of driving, I have discovered that finding R1 and R2 can be hit and miss.  Is there something I did wrong when assembling?  

My buddy has the same the same issue with his Ghia. He replaced the shift rod bushing as well as the coupler, and fooled around with the stop plate position quite a bit but was unable to find the "sweet spot."  What he did find was that if he put a 1/4" rubber spacer between the shifter and the stop plate, he could find everything without a problem.  Kinda like a quick shift kit, as it changes the shifter leverage.

Anyone got any ideas?

         How are the nosecone bushings? On my spare trans the bushes are stuffed and I can easily wobble the hockey stick to get almost 1mm gap. I did notice that while rotating the hockeystick through the shift rods' gates, it would catch unless it was centred (in the bushings, as much as was possible given their condition).

How about seeing if you can loosen the coupler and turn the shift rod a bit?

My other thought isn't nice....shift rods/selector forks inside the gearhousing need re-alignment.....

Small update.  I've just been dealing with the gear finding, but this morning it was really bad.  So bad I had to pull over until I could get it into R1, which would at least get me up to the 45MPH speed limit.  Once I parked at work, I found that I could still not find the gears, even with the car off.  So, that ruled out something with the shifter contacts, servo, and control valve.  A bit of fooling about and I found that I could reliably find the gears if I pushed down on the shifter in the same manner I would to get into reverse.  This has me thinking that the problem is the stop plate alignment, or as you mention, the coupler.

After work, i'll see if I can do some small adjustment to the plate and see what happens.  if anyone has any other ideas, let me know!

(looking sheepish)  Well, I found the problem.  This morning I went out, tried to shift into neutral, and ther was nothing.  The whole shifter just wiggled all over the place.  Looked at the coupler under the back seat and....found it was totally disconnected.  Apparently I didn't tighten it down when I installed it.   :oops:
