Hello everyone!

I have come to the conclusion that the the engineers of the Auto-stick must have had a twisted sense of humour. Updating from my last post; I replaced the old vacuum lines (all of them are new now). I also had to "T" my small vacuum line from the Vacuum Control and my Vacuum regulator on the distributor together to go into my only port in the carb.

I started the car up no problem in neutral and was able to shift it into gear!!! Whooohooo I thought..... but alas!....the transmission itself never went in gear. It was like it remained in neutral through all gears. I then put it back in the neutral position and it made this horrible sound. It sounded like when you hear the wheel turning over on the brakes but a bit louder.

So my next guess, is to check my clutch servo to see if it is functioning correctly.  :?

As always I gladly accept any advice from you guys.

Yup, check the servo.  Check the lines to the vac tank and from the tank to the servo.

Hello again,

I pulled the clutch servo, it has excellent vacuum. It moves freely and works like it should. So my problem is not my servo.

As I was taking off the servo I did notice fine metal shaving in the housing where the transmission bolts to the engine. I am guessing thats not good    That is where my grinding was coming from when I had it in neutral. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Thanks again for the help!

If the small vacuum hose coming from Your carbureter doesn't have enough vacuum, it will take a long time for the clutch to engage...
making the car virtually undriveable....
Not sure where You saw the metal filings....

so, Maybe Your gearshift linkage is OK...
I only have one small connection to My carburetor...
this is the one that engages the clutch...

My gearbox does make a grinding noise in neutral...
My gearbox was stored for 9 years with new Hypoid gear oil
which I have now found causes corrosion to brass/copper bushes in the gearbox..
so, I'll have to replace My gearbox in the future...
The noise was very loud but has now settled down, but it can sound like a brake drum with broken brake parts grinding away..

Hi Lee,

Would putting a "T" in the vaccuum line reduce it that much?

Also, being new to AS I believe the metal filings were in the the TC housing. The band actually between the actual tranny and the engine. And I also think that is the result of the gringing/rubbing sound I hearrrd whilst it was in the neutral gear.

Yes Lee that is exactly the sound.

I would check the torque converter bolts to make sure that they are tight. All of the bolts came out of my car and there's a groove in the housing from the bolt heads. This part of the transmission is sealed off from the rest, so the metal shouldn't a problem.

Hi Mike,

 My email is malachi36@hotmail.com

I would really appreciate that pdf file, that would be awesome!

I took the Beetle for a test drive today!!!!!!! Whoooohoooooo!!!

I bought another control valve and recieved it today and wasted no time swapping it with the original. After I installed it; I cranked the engine, it fires right up, put it in gear....and....nothing. I was left just scratching my head as the engine was running. Then as I was deep in befuddlement I put my hand on the gearshift and gave it a turn and the transmission popped into gear!!!!!!! Appearently the doodads were still making contact. (Which means my other CV is fine) Well, I took the car off the jacks, fired it up, and backed it out of the garage!!! I proceeded to drive just once around the block and park her.

I do have a few minor issues to tackle but.... it's ALIVE!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for their advice and help, you guys are awesome!

My torque converter bolts did the same thing.  They all came loose and machined a nice groove in the bell housing!  I now check them occasionally to make sure it doesn't happen again.  I know how you felt!

68AutoBug

We probably all have those bolt marks in our bellhousing... lol...

anyway good to see your car now drives....

these cars have a lot of things that can go wrong....

but once they are driveable... Wow.. thats when the fun begins...

cheers
