Thanks for the pic.  If anyone else has a spare trans, could you stand it up and pull the plug out and look?  Also post your trans code.

I was flipping through the Haynes manual the other day.  It lists Low gear as 2.25:1, so I'm not making this stuff up

thanks for showing where the numbers were Sean, otherwise i would never have found them...

BA21  6090  are the numbers on My spare gearbox...

the numbers on My original gearbox are painted....

plus I have another gearbox to pick up...

these are all from 1968 model beetles with 1500cc engine...
and possibly all have 4.375 final drives...

Gads, that's where it is!

But here's my data:

B 0078 215.  This has two temperature switches and the drain plug below the gear carrier.

BA 031 5926. Also has two switches but no drain plug.

BG 045 9860
This last is one of the later units which, per the Blue Bentley, has one of the temp switches and the corresponding control switch eliminated.  This unit, per the table posted above, was specific to a Karmann Ghia.  Drain plug in the bottom plate.

I haven't eyeballed the low gears yet.  Piles of other crap to do on this car right now.

I bet this one has my 2.25:1 low gear.

My BA  gearbox has the two temperature switches plus the drain hole in the gearbox....  no hole in the plate...

My other gearbox [should also be a BA]  also has the two temp switches and no drain hole in the plate...

is it possible to fit a reversing light switch to one of these BA transaxles??

I had my buddy look over his and the spare I gave him.

BO 0085
BE 0036

I'll have to crawl under mine and see what the code is there.

If anyone is due for a gear oil change, you could use a mirror to see if the gear has a line in it while the plug is out.  Then report here what gear is with what letter code.

I bet this one has my 2.25:1 low gear.

Indeed it does.

And B 0078 has the 2.06:1.  No groove.
