Intake Manfold Question

I have a dual port engine from a standard trans car, that I would like to rebuild for my AS Ghia.

I am currently installing the original single port which is fine as is, but I really want to do a full engine rebuild on the DP.

Can my existing single port intake manifold be modified, say by cutting off the ends that go to the heads, and then using the DP end castings with it? Or is there enough difference in the mf that I should shop around for a used AS DP version manifold?  Or could I modify the DP mf I have in hand by simply adding the connection for the control valve?

Plus, what other mechanical considerations (AS specific parts, e.g.) are there in going to the DP?

Thx,
Larry

Hiya Larry,

The manifolds are built (IIRC) from different size tubing and I don't believe that cutting a single and trying to fit the cast ends from a dual will work out for you.

That leaves you with buying an AS dual port manifold.  These are around.  But there is another option..............  In 1971 VW Busses were equipped with the same intake manifold as on our AutoSticks.  Their vacuum port led out to their brake assist booster.  These manifolds are out there also.  I am currently running one on my AS.  So, it may not be all that difficult to locate that manifold.

In a worst case scenario, you could adapt a standard manifold to your situation by tapping it and welding in a vacuum port.

Another DP consideration would be your oil/ATF pump.  The pump you have in your 70 engine (a "B" series engine if original) will not be compatible with pumps from earlier years, but may be be interchangeable with DPs.  Check to see if you have a dished camshaft in both engines before attempting to "transplant".

Thanks Mike!

If anyone else can comment on this oil pump issue it would be helpful.
