I'm going to add this for everyone to reference. The website went down in 2017, but here is an archived page with partial English translations in the articles on the top by a real person.

"VW 1302 S/LS, VW 1303 S/LS, 1st edition 1973"

On Windows 10 you can open the print page dialogue, select the PDF option where your printer is listed in the drop-down menu, and save each section as a PDF. Enjoy.

Technical / Flex/Drive plate warping and s...
Last post by 1972autostick - 27 November 2023, 08:44
So I'm in the final stages of rebuilding my auto stick engine and I have rigged up two metal shims with holes and am bracing the drive plate using two of its holes into the engine cases holes. I can't use for because my engine stand prevents me.

The drive plate looks like it has bowed a millimeter or two for the two that I was holding it with. Just how much can it flex in a way that does not undermine or damage its use when installed back against the torque converter? What level of buggery can a drive plate take and be reinstalled and working order? Will it cause the torque converter to wobble etc.

Additionally I measured the end play as .005" without the drive plate installed. The engine originally had three shims of .24 mm. Everything on the engine is exactly the same parts except that I had taken the rotating assembly to a machinist. After checking the end play with three shims and torquing down the drive plate there does not appear to be any measurable end play. Taking away one shim, I am left with needing a shim of .17-.18 mm.

For that should I use extra fine sandpaper to file down one of my .24 mm shims to fit? I've also got one of the old flywheel paper gaskets for an earlier car I could maybe use. I ordered a micrometer and it will be getting here in a few days.

Any advice is appreciated! I have just 4 weeks to finish the engine, put the body back on, connect everything up, and hopefully be driving.

Technical / Transmission plate bolt size, ...
Last post by 1972autostick - 18 November 2023, 21:41
I'm in a bit of a pickle. No one seems to know the size of the bolts that go on the bottom of the transmission, bolting the plate on. From my experimentation, I believe the bolts to be a Metric size 7 with a 1.25 thread pitch.

I base this conclusion on two things. Firstly, we have a NAPA and they had a test area. I brought my bolt and it would not fit in the M7 more than a few mm's before binding. Visually it appeared to be have 1.25 thread pitch as well. Secondly, I read somewhere that Volkswagen made fasteners custom for the work rather than the same measures of standardization common to other manufacturers. So some things can be non-standard sizes.

I do not want to retap the threads, oversize them, etc. I am looking for confirmation that I'm not crazy and they are M7 1.25, and am looking for options on how to get replacements. I was not able to find a tap and die set to make my own. Can these be bought anywhere? I would prefer not to buy a whole other autostick transmission just to salvage the bolts. Surely there is another option?

In the attached pictures, you can see the ones I am missing. I appreciate any and all assistance!

05DEC2023 UPDATE: I scavenged one from a spare autostick transmission, though still, anyone have anything to say about the bolt thread pitch... hello?

Hi Sean,

Wow not many Aus members out there then.

My car is a 71 standard.

In my case, the floods were not too bad. My car was damaged however the only consequence was lots of time off the road. Nothing compared to most in town.

Valla show looks great. Perhaps see you there!

Hello AutoStick associates. My Beetle is a 73 AutoStick convertible in relatively good condition I think. (I'm not a mechanic.) Most of the body and frame are original and rust free. The doors and the panel behind one door has been repaired for rust. (Non magnetic in places.) Even the floor pans are original I believe and are in good condition.
I bought the car in February 2022. It was in running condition when I bought it but I've only driven it about 1000 miles since then. Thank God for the informative videos and websites like Vwar.org for providing so much valuable help which has shown me how to do some simple maintenance. As I mentioned before I'm not a mechanic, never done extensive work on cars, but I am mechanically inclined. In addition to other areas, I've worked on the brakes and worked on the shifter rod tube and the lock out plate, bushing, and rear coupling. And of course, I've devoted lots of time trying to reduce oil leakage. There's no way that I can consider pulling the engine and transmission and rebuilding because...I'm 73 years old and only have a apartment sized one car unheated garage to work in.
Thank you Lee (68AutoBug) for suggesting using Promar oil additive in the gearbox. I'll have to look into that because mine makes more noise than I would like it to.
Best wishes to you all from Chicagoland, Bud.

Davesquared,
Where is that oil junction type thing leading to? Maybe (don't have EKTA fiche handy at the moment) it is part of EGR/Vent. There would be only a few spigots up on top of your engine where it could go. Alternatively - post up on www.thesamba.com in the Ghia section.

Hi, under my car. The black round canister with the hose going to the solenoid. I know what that does. But the other round part, is this part of the autostick? its on a 68 ghia, but engine and trans are 71. The hose A was just hanging loose, and hole B, should there be a hose on that? Connecting to what?

Thanks

Jordan,
Another Aus member, hoo-ray. I know no-one up your way but Lee is in Scone & I am here in Sydney.
'71 Standard or '71 Super? You are close to Valla where they hold a large VW show & a lot of volksies are up that way on the coast/Coffs. How'd you fare with the floods up there?

Regards
Sean aka Volkenstein.
