Technical / Crunch once when reversing
Last post by The Keszthely Kid - 21 March 2023, 14:36
Hola Amigos,

On Sunday morning I started up my '73 KG Coupe for her first road trip of 2023. When I tried to select Reverse the gearbox 'crunched' as if it were a manual 3 pedal car and I was not using the clutch :o
I pushed my KG out of the garage, started her up again, selected 'L' and drove back into the garage :)
Then I tried selecting Reverse again and all was fine :-*
Even the shakedown run around beautiful downtown Batley went well!

Does anyone know why this should happen? She has never done this before in 5 years of ownership. During every winter month I start her up, reverse out of the garage along my driveway then drive her back into the garage with no problems.

Any answers much appreciated.

I found today that the lever on the input shaft needed to be removed, rotated and reinstalled.  After doing that, everything functions as it should.  Thank you.

Technical / Autostick will not shift - Rec...
Last post by folkega - 20 March 2023, 01:30
My 1968 Beetle Convertible autostick has been reassembled after a body off restoration.  It will not shift into gear.  I get a lot of grinding, so the clutch is obviously not engaging.  I have verified all electrical and also all vacuum.  The vacuum actuator is operating properly, based on visual inspection when the solenoid circuit is grounded.  This afternoon I disassembled the vacuum actuator and have access to the clutch lever attached to the selector shaft.  With the car not running, the lever can easily be moved through approximately 15-20 degrees without any resistance.  Is this normal, or has the lever become disengaged from the clutch during the engine removal and reinstallation somehow?  I really don't want to pull the engine again, but will just get on with it if that is the problem.  Prior to this body-off, I had removed and replaced the engine once with no shifting issues. During that previous engine removal and reinstallation I also replaced the trans input shaft seal.   Thank you for any guidance you can provide.  I am anxious to get this autostick back on the road with her newly refreshed paint and trim.

Technical / Having a hard time installing ...
Last post by FallyFire - 07 March 2023, 22:13
Hey everyone, finally got the shift bushing installed, but I can't seem to get the shifter to sit right in the cup. When I shift gears, it keeps popping up out of the cup. Can anyone tell me what position the transmission needs to be pulled or pushed from for Neutral? Maybe I'm installing it in gear or something. Thanks if you can help! This is just the last step I need to get her back on the road again!

Technical / Transmission Upgrade
Last post by LA Irish - 16 February 2023, 23:02
Looking to upgrade the trans.  Would like better gearing from freeway driving.  Also looking to convert the 1641 that I have and swap it out for a Subi 1.8L.  Anyone done this?

Love the bug and want to keep it a Autostick.  My left leg can no long work a clutch no matter how easy it is.

No, your vacuum signal decreases at WOT so in your case at 3900 RPM your vacuum advance would be minimal. Almost all of your advance at WOT comes from centrifugal advance. At highway speeds you need 28 to 32 degrees of advance.

Hello, did you ever get this figured out??
It almost sounds to me like your shift rod bushing has broken, I'm not sure how else that rod could move the way you describe! It would definitely explain why it is no longer centered. You can also check the shift rod coupling in the back of the transmission tunnel under the hatch. Make sure you still have that tensioner spring - sometimes it works loose there.

But what is vacuum advance at WOT? Is it still around 10 degrees?

According to Old Volks Home, the advance specs on my Bosch AE distributor are:

Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 8-12deg Adv; Centrifugal: 13-16deg @ 2200rpm, 25-28deg @ 3900rpm

So wouldn't this mean that I'd be getting close to 40 degrees total advance if I am still getting 10 degrees of vacuum advance combined with the 28 degrees of mechanical advance at 3900 RPM (WOT)? That seems awfully high!

To check the function of the centrifugal advance, with timing light connected and vacuum advance line disconnected and plugged you can check the function of centrifugal advance by merely keeping the timing light on while increasing RPM by pushing the accel arm. You can do the same after re-connecting the vacuum line to test the function of the vacuum advance. If you have a dwell/rpm meter you can measure more accurately. With the two (cent and vacuum) combined you should get a max advance of around 34 degrees. For my car I always adjust the timing for maximum advance (34 degrees) at 3,000 rpm. IMO this is far more important than setting the timing at the prescribed setting at 900rpm.

Technical Information / Re: Gearbox Codes
Last post by sb001 - 09 February 2023, 04:59
Hey all!!
Have not posted here in many moons! But, came across this thread and decided to resurrect it to ask about my spare tranny in the garage:
It has code BA 0230438, as shown in the attached photo. Have not seen another with that many numbers (7) after the "BA" designation- any ideas what the extra numbers are for?
