Got the Old gen off and cant get the two (Hubs?) the Keyed round flanged items on the shaft at the end of threaded parts they wont budge and while this gen looks like it might just be the 68 Original 41 Year old Item
I tried WD40 soaked for 3 hours.
Any help or advice is welcome.
Thanx

Joe,
I used a two arm puller on both ends of the gennie shaft. Examine the hubs (particularly the pulley) for ANY bruising whatsoever on that hub or the shaft. There are two woodruff keys as well that the hubs locate on. Probabl a good idea to use a real penetrant. WD-40 is OK but there are better ones (Kroil).

Another word of warning from bitter experience..when (or if) you're getting the pulley half off, be very aware of what the puller is doing to the OD of the pulley. You may totally warp it if the shaft/hub is bruised or frozen.

Good Luck
Sean

PS...IIRC I forgot that I had a large bearing puller I could have used on the pulley...but that never happened...

Ditto... I had a $9.99 four prong set from Harbor Freight and it worked like a dream! Just be careful... If you put too much strain on the pulleys, they, or one, will warp. This will then eat up your belt and sound horrible and possibly cause other issues. Guess how I know that will happen?

A little carefully applied propane torch heat and gentle hammer tapping can be a big help in freeing up parts frozen by time & corrosion. ;D

Well ended up taking the Old Gen to the Place I purchased new as I had core charge(they put the core in the vice, and Pryed with 2two Huge Screwdriver type prybars that did the trick). Sorry aint been around lately. I ended up having to reinstall windows on my computer ..long story.
Anyways Back, and while I got everything put back together as I took it off, new generator installed, My engine runs like crap now and is bucking and the belts wobbling and its a nightmare I followed the directions in the Haynes.
the belt is at 1/2 in play while pressing finger inward between both pullies. Same belt same shims just new gen. and now my bug sounds like crap! HELP! PLEASE!

it seems that the pulley halves aren't aligned correctly..
Have You tightened the Nut up really tight???

also try a new fan belt...
that belt may be worn to the contours of the old pulleys...
place another shim under the nut and see if its any better...
the belts really do need to be tight to stop them slipping..

the pulleys are made of fairly thick steel
but they may have been damaged slightly...
is the woodruff key in properly??

cheers

That sloppy running sounds  like a spark plug wire accidently dislodged or some other simple thing.

sorry didn't report back on this my Laptop died and that was the PC I was using to post this originally as I could take it out to the car with me
Long story short I was having all kinds of trouble with the car till I took it to the place I originally bought the gen from pulled the gen out in their parking lot LOL getting fairly speedy at it did have a friend to help tho took bout 20 mins anyway originally purchased a new pully thinking that may have been the problem sill smacking noise finally pulled gen out with fan intact and it was the fan.
it was peeling way and rusty at the bolt on point so new fan and am scooting along at 60+ hehe I am conscerned I may have the thermo flaps hindered tho as its seeming to run hot. it is Still high 90F and even warmer inland I don't know much about the thermostat tho and honsetly do I even need it in So Cal where it never freezes? I know it may grate against some purests to disco items the German engineer deemed useful but...
Couldn't I just get a CHT gauge and pay close attention to that? I do plan on getting this next payday either way.
As well as connecting some other gauges like amp meter and oil pressure gauge, the sending unit on my 68 is diaphram based so only really (indicates idiot light when the idiot f'd up too much) I wanna know all I can about my baby before idiot lights light!.
